Odd machine ...your thoughts please

#1 Post by jpdarcis » Sun Aug 01, 2010 2:07 am

Hi,

Yesterday, I came across this ad which aroused my attention:

http://cgi.ebay.com/IBM-THINKPAD-T60p-T ... 335f848e04

I am wondering if this machine is worth the money asked and would appreciate your thoughts, not being very familiar with T6xs.

Thanks

Worth the money ($1500)??? In my opinion, no. Very similar systems can be had for 1/2 the price. The 3 year warranty is NOT from the factory but rather is covered by Mack. This may be relevant since T61/p systems with the NVidia graphics chip have had some problems recently. That particular seller has been discussed here several times before. Search the archives for ibmfactoryoutlet. Here's the neutral and negative feedback on them:

In short, do your homework and if you think it's a good deal, then go for it.

To the best of my knowledge The T61p 4:3 aspect ratio ThinkPads were only available with 128mb of video ram while the wide screen T61p's did have the 256mb of video ram with the same nVidia GPU.

Other than this one error in the description there is nothing else I see that can't be had. At their asking price a SSD should be includied. This ThinkPad is a T61p in a T60 chassis. You could probably buy both the 14.1 inch 4:3 aspect ratio T61p and a 15" T60 and do it yourself for much less and have enough left over to get the SSD.

Just my .02c.

Thanks. I did realize the warranty offered could not be from factory. Your other comments do put things in perspective. My main interest in this ad was the Flexview display. I have come to expect best quality since I have owned a R51 with this display for six years and I could never buy a machine with those glary screens.

Any suggestion about getting a modern machine with a 4:3 matte with a 1400x1050 will be most welcome.

They did make a T61p in a 4:3 ratio, but it was 14" only - no 15", no flexview. This machine has to be Frankenpad. There was no 15" 4:3 case made and the 4:3 motherboard mounting holes are a little different between T60 and T61
