Thinkpad W510 takes 2 shutdown commands to work

I select shutdown and it spins for a while then stops. Then I wait approx 30 seconds and select it again and it shuts down ASAP. Where do I start? I looked to see if any processes are hanging and I always manually shutdown all programs and files first.....
