Compatible replacement screen for T60
Compatible replacement screen for T60
Is there any way I can find out if an old screen from R32 will work with my T60 (both 15"), other than trying it out myself. More generally, how do I find out which screen part numbers/ laptop numbers I can try. Trying to save some money here, by using an old screen.
Re: Compatible replacement screen for T60
Hello and welcome to the forum.
Are you sure you don't mean 14.1" ? I couldn't find any information stating that the R32 ever was configurable with a 15" LCD, only 14.1".
What is the specific model number of the R32 screen (stated on the back)?
According to http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/TFT_display the Hydis HX14X14 will work. But i'm doubting whether that's true. This display is also listed as compatible for T20 and T21 for example. Looking elsewhere on the list, LG LP141X6 is also used in the T20 and T21. The LP141X6 is definitely an LCD with a 20 pin connector. The T60 uses 30 pin connector LCDs, which is much more common these days.

I don't have an R32 to look at, and I agree it is probably a 20-pin connector, but even if the connector is 30 pins, be careful. Most of the screens from that era had no eeid (configuration chip). The lack of the chip can cause you to blow a fuse on your motherboard, which will leave you needing more than just a screen.
Re: Compatible replacement screen for T60
Thanks Richk and Troels for the informative replies. I checked back with my friend (who was offering me his old system) and he confirmed that it actually is a 14.1". He should have told me earlier I wish.
In any case, according to Thinkwiki T60 uses multiple screen types, and puts it in the list with models "T42, T43, R50, R50e, R51, R51e, R52, T60" . Can I use anyone of them without compatibility issues.
Also, any suggestions on where can I find a used screen online?

Re: Compatible replacement screen for T60
Unless there are more errors then yes - but the T6x series and onwards identifies the screen and timings of it from an EDID stored on a chip located on the backside of the LCD panel. Previous series to T6x did not use the EDID, and hence the chip (EEPROM) may not contain all the required informations - mainly extended timings for the LCD to work in the T6x.
However, the EEPROM can be reflashed with a proper EDID - the easiest way is to use PowerStrip and an external monitor, so you can see what is happening.
Just curious - what's wrong with your current screen?
What screen will you be looking for? 1024x768, 1400x1050, 1600x1200, 2048x1536 ?

Re: Compatible replacement screen for T60
Broke it
It was a 1024X768, and ideally I'd like to upgrade, but anything will work given that my system now have some cosmetic damages too, and thus I don't want to invest a whole lot into it. Although I'd admit I love my system, particularly the black color and 4:3 aspect ratio.
In any case, given the fact that I don't really know how to reflesh the screen, and very limited knowledge I otherwise have, I think it'd be a safe bet, if I just look around for a T60 screen. Thanks for all your help. Any suggestions where can I find a used screen?

Re: Compatible replacement screen for T60
Ask in our Marketforum, or else on eBay.
Here's a genuine SXGA+ screen (1400x1050) for an excellent price: http://cgi.ebay.com/IBM-Lenovo-T60-Matt ... 0519492781
If you want it, hurry, it'll be gone in no time.
Bit of a fiddle replacing the LCD, but cheap enough.
If you are really stuck, I could do the replacement for a small fee.

If it really must be XGA and used is ok:
http://cgi.ebay.com/OEM-IBM-LENOVO-T60- ... 3a5cd23df1
or
http://cgi.ebay.com/IBM-THINKPAD-T60-15 ... 335f9e0720
But the SXGA+ RealBlackStuff linked to above is every $2 more worth it (as he implies, actually much more).
Taobao.com might also be a possiblity, but not cost-effective. A lot more LCDs can be modified to work, but you'll mostly find them from stores that only sell compatible panels which often don't work correctly before re-flashing the EDID, if the "compatible" screen has an EEPROM. I'm thinking similar models from Quanta (defunct?), AU Optronics, Hitachi (old) may exist.
