Alright, I been having problems with my T61 C2D (2.0 GHz). The origanal AC Adapter 65W 20V (Lenovo Branded, 11S92P1160Z1ZBGH75W548 REV:E)(I bought the T61 used, but this was what came with it), had some nice bite marks from a little dog. Well months later it finally split into two. I tried a charger for the hell of it from a family members, R60 the charger fit. But it did not charge or anything on my T61, the R60 AC Adapter 90W 20V (Thinkpad Branded, 11S92P1113Z1ZBEL6B102E REV:G); this was replacement bought 3 months ago. Well I ordered a new one overnighted from Amazon, thought it would work with no luck (Lenovo Branded, 11S4T5292Z1ZEB7959GF8 REV:01).

Is the new charger not the correct one? It fits in the port, but not the correct model? I know the T61 came with a 90W charger and higher watage is so post to charge the battery faster (probably not noticible). I don't think it's some strange software issue? But I did reformat it and was in the middle of installing new drivers from Lenovo, did download the new powermanagment. The charging port has a bit of play in the T61, but not to much (But it's there). I would say it's a hair bit worse then the R60 and I've seen much worse in used laptops.

Any ideas? Would like to get this up and running ASAP. Also would like to order this from Amazon under prime and overnight it.

The 20V 65W adapters are used for machines with Intel integrated graphics.
The 20V 90W adapters are for machines with ATI and/or nVidia graphics.
It is generally recommended to use IBM/Lenovo original adapters, and not some generic "will work/is compatible".
It would not harm to tighten that adapter port.

So I can't run the 90W Powersuply on the integrated T61? The R60 is also integrated and runs 90W powersupply. Also how would I go buy tighten the adapter port? Open it up and solder it down?

Edit: Also all of them are branded IBM/Lenovo. I assume to buy quality now then latter.

90-watt will work on integrated or discrete. (any model) If you use a 65-watt on discrete graphics models, the CPU may run at lower speeds. The connector on the back is screwed into the frame from below. The machine must be completely disassembled to get at it.

So I guess the question is, did I buy the correct AC Adapter (Lenovo Branded, 11S4T5292Z1ZEB7959GF8 REV:01)? If not what one should I buy? I also should note, that the new one also does not work on the R60.

Basically, if you bought an authentic 90W model, you're well off. The only issue is whether you paid for an adapter that's "overqualified" for your needs. A 90W model may generally be unnecessary on an Intel-based GPU model, unless you use power-hungry peripherals.

I often have several external drives connected at once, and find I need the 90W in most circumstances. If I had a model with an nVidia or ATI GPU, I would definitely need it. Also, in like circumstances where you're pushing power requirements to the limit, choosing a particular OEM manufacturer (there are/have been several suppliers for Lenovo) may also be wise. Check out this thread (and my posts therein) regarding that topic.

Also, be advised that the use of the Advanced dock, and Advanced Mini Dock require a 90W model and include them. The system will not boot when a 65W model is used with them even on an Intel machine.

Could it be a defective adapter?
Use a DC voltmeter to measure the output (~20V) of that adapter. The center pin is the Plus.

I bought it mostly because it was $3.xx more then the 65w model. I am going to guess it defective, because it does not even work the R60? But the 90w 20v, model does not even work on the T61. So maybe it's best I try to pop it open clean her up and give everything a once over (Once I get a decent tool kit). But in a nutshell, there is no reason (unless defective) that model I purchased won't work on my T61? How about on the R60 and vice versa with it's charger?

The ATI/nVidia machines must use the 90W unit.
The Intel gfx machines can use either 90W or 65W units.
T60/R60/T61/R61 and a whole bunch of others can all use the same 20V adapters (but see above) and are interchangeable.

Well thanks for the help. I guess I will run up to office depot and check for a decent toll kit there, since I want to get it up and running ASAP. Maybe it's just that it loose and that's the problem. If that does not fix it they I don't know... Part it out and move on?

What's the exact 7-character Type/Model of your T61 (looks like 7659-1QU on a sticker on the bottom of your laptop)?
If a xxxx-CTO model, you might see the real model in the first BIOS screen.
Bit early to give up on it yet.
All you need is a small, good PH1 screwdriver to take that lappie apart.
If you plan to sell it, I'd like to be the first one to know .

That's no help at all.
If you have a CTO (Configured To Order) we also need:
- what graphics (nVidia or Intel)
- what CPU (T7100 etc.)
- what screen size and type (like 14.1" or 15.4", standard or widescreen, XGA, SXGA+, etc.

I did not know it was a Configured To Order.

Both batteries are dead. What I do know...

Aw, that's a widescreen, what a shame (only because personally I don't like WS).
There should be plenty life left in that old dog, once you sort the power connector out.

Question: does the R60 adapter work on the R60?
Did you try your new adapter on the R60?
If it works there, you may have blown a fuse on the T61 motherboard.
Did you try another wall socket as well?

Yes, I tried the R60 charger on the T61. I even tried the new charger on the R60. Both times no luck, I tried 5 sockets in my apartment with the same results. No chargers work on my T61.

Looks like you got a dud (T61) adapter. Return for a replacement/refund.
And you may have blown your motherboard, if the R60 adapter works (on the R60) but not on your T61.
It could be only a fuse, but if more serious:
look for 41W1487 or 42W7866, both Intel gfx + 1394 Firewire, starting around $150.-
Can't say where the difference between them is.

42w7866 supports Penryn (T8xxx, T9xxx) CPU. (It will work on any Intel T61) 42W1487 doesn't do Penryn

Thanks for the info, but I really don't think the motherboard is fried. As I can still start the laptop on battery power (only have 4%). I took it down most of the way now, but went as far as I could with a warned out screw driver (any further will just do damage).
