How to fix a broken key on a T61?

#1 Post by SD1992 » Sun Sep 05, 2010 11:57 am

I recently bought a Thinkpad T61, and it is brilliant. Only small problem with it is that the left click button under the touch pad is a bit broken.

Here is a photo...

Does anyone here know how to fix it? I was thinking of just putting some superglue under it and holding it in place, but I thought I should probably check here first.

Thanks for any help!

Hi there and welcome to the forum.

I wouldn't bother spending time trying to glue this. A new unit can be bought for $12 here: http://cgi.ebay.com/IBM-Lenovo-Thinkpad ... 0519063401

One of the keys on my T60 lost it's tension, so I ordered one of these last week. I am hoping it will arrive one of the next days. This seller, "thinkpan" has a lot of Thinkpad stuff, so make sure to look if you need anything else as well.

Edit: Not sure if he ships overseas, but there are also other on eBay who sells Touchpads.

That's more reasonable than I thought they would be.

By the way, is the damage to his key really irreparable, or just too difficult for most to fix?

It's not possible to determine based on that picture. It is quite possible that the button is just out of place and can be snapped right back there by pressing down on it. In some cases it requires removing the whole button and the mechanism, and reseating it. The worst thing, of course is if some piece of the plastic mechanism is broken or missing - then it really is irreparable.

That's what I was thinking from the picture. I know they aren't keycaps, but I wonder if the buttons are similar. Fortunately this hasn't happened to me...yet. ;)
