Yes, you can install a T7200, T7400, or T7600.

well
got the new keyboard and psu ,powered up and it runs just one problem it is locked into bios the chap from the data wipe company thought it would be clear but gave me a 4 digit number that the tech guy had written on the paper work that might be it ,if needed , no luck, so is there any way round this , also can i install new hdd and then run win7 or will that all be missing due a need to access bios, maybe even a hdd password or is that installed on the hard drive, been down this route with a t30 mb when it arrived in the bag there was a little pcb floating around loose i stupidly thought it must have been the sound card of course it was the security chip so that board became junk cos i could not get it to pair back to mb
i guess pulling the bios battery will do nothing.
not doing anything till someone can direct me not having this as junk

regards ian,,,, very disapointed

Put your old T2400 CPU back in and APPLY FRESH THERMAL PASTE after you cleaned off the old gunk with (91% or better) isopropyl alcohol!
Then update the BIOS using a USB floppy drive or burn a CD from the .iso file. Do NOT update from within Windows!
When the T7400 comes, apply fresh thermal paste.
Without it, it won't boot or damage the laptop!

I would use Arctic Silver thermal paste, and you did get the correct chip, it is the SL9SE number that is important, not just any T7200, T7400, or T7600 will work.

you WILL need a newer BIOS, and then you should be good to go for Windows 7 64-bit or other 64-bit OS (still have a 3GB RAM limit though, even if you stuff 4GB into it.)

put the T2400 back in and see if the overheating problem persists, if it runs with T2400, you can go ahead and flash the new BIOS in the normal way from a CD you made from iso file on lenovo support site while the T2400 is installed, then your BIOS will be ready for the T7400

the T7400 runs about the same operation temperatures as T2400, so I highly doubt that the CPU change is responsible for the overheating, so also check that you are getting a strong physical bond between heatsink & CPU, I had to strategically bend my T60 heatpipe to get a really good pressure adhesision between CPU, GPU and heatsink - I even put a dime on top of the GPU for better pressure/conductivity (US dime coin is 91.7% copper)

also, check your fan with a known voltage source for correct operation, and verify heatsink fins are clean & clear

hello
all done new core 2 duo in and working ok, new battery working well one from china about £27 delivered seems to last about 4 hours overall very pleased win7 x64 works very well picked up all the drivers it states areo working if i knew what that was i have tri boot with xp64 and xp 32 as well might include win98 just for some really old games i like the wifi it is excellent , i did infact do bios from desktop with lenovo utility includes embedded controller as well there were no problems just made sure that was the only thing going on, having trouble with the Kb though it seems slightly to big and the 3 arrow keys are tight against palm rest , the 4g of ram is working so it was the same price as a 2g and a 1g stick i bought a muli burner for £20 that fit my t41p a well.

thanks all for help

the 3 arrow keys should be at least 1mm from palm rest or else you either have incorrect keyboard for this machine or else the keyboard not installed correctly (this is the much more likely case than the wrong keyboard)

Make sure the palm rest is installed correctly too. It has to slide in at the front first and then snaps down.

The thinkpad I inherited had a similar issue due to the palm rest not being installed correctly after it's original memory upgrade.

It never left it's docking station though so it wasn't apparent until I inherited it.

thanks

i think the palm rest is poorly located, i think i was over keen to screw it all back together as when i bought it there was no k/b, i clocked it locates at the k/b edge then drops down at the front, that when i discovered a switch to enable the wifi

thanks again ian
