Another Hard Drive Replacement Q

The patient is a T61 - not my favorite Thinkpad due to being a silly widescreen, although 1680x1050, and having weird up-and-down brightness issues when run on batteries - rarely something I have to do, thankfully.
I happened to find a CD of the Hitachi Drive Fitness Test while cleaning up some stuff last night, and on a whim I threw it in the T61. To my surprise, the test failed although the program didn't give me any details due to it not being a Hitachi drive - it's a Seagate 5400 RPM guy.
I just ran the Seagate "SeaTools" test and they too failed. Several tests gave inexplicable error codes such as 6CD8D4D4 which their documentation and a Google search failed to decipher. But I'm going to hypothesize that the drive is likely to fail, although I've not knowingly observed anything bad with it.
So I'm curious what the current thinking is on drives. It's an opportunity to go to a 7200 drive; I don't think I can justify the expense of a Trim-capable SSD right now, given that I use my FlexView T60p a lot more. The Hitachi HUC103014CSS600, a 147 Gig 10K model at a surprisingly-affordable price, is intriguing - anyone here ever run a 10K drive in a laptop?
Anyway, pontification is welcome.
