Upgrade T60 Processor? From T2400 to T7400?

#1 Post by Padhead » Fri Sep 24, 2010 2:35 am

Hello again. Is it possible to upgrade a T60 Processor, from T2400 to say a T7400? Do they have same FSB? Are there any issues such as battery life? or Overheating, etc?

I probably don't want to the conversion unless super easy, so how long would it take to do?

With hardware maintenance manual it is not complicated. Label the screws.

I recently switched t2400 to t7200 and did not see significant change in temperatures, especially in idle and light use. The load temps increased somewhat. The good thing is that the new chip can be undervolted to minimum voltage for all frequencies and thus the fan does not spin at all unless there is some significant load on the processor.

You're better off from a performance perspective putting a good SSD in your machine than doing the CPU upgrade. Most uses don't really push the CPU enough to where you'd notice a difference. Pick up the modular caddy to use your old drive for extra storage.

A SSD will shorten boot times and app load times. Those I think are in my opinion more likely to make your machine seems faster than a CPU upgrade. Keep in mind the T60 is a SATA I machine. Anything with heavy throughput on the drive will be capped at SATA I speeds, but it still will make more of a difference than the CPU.

(If that question is for me) I dont use the laptop on battery almost at all. So I have not made any comparison.
