Are you guys satisfied with your T60?

#1 Post by manteiv » Fri Sep 24, 2010 9:52 pm

I want to get opinion of actual owners of T60, I have been offered a T60 1951-4MU for about $200. Are they good machines? is $200 a fair price today?

I currently have a 600E, T23 and a couple of T41 and T42 so is the T60 a good addition to my 'collection'?

Also, is the T60 comparable to the T40s in terms of weigh and size?

Product: ThinkPad T60 1951-4MU
Original description: T2400(1.83GHz), 1GB RAM, 60GB 7200rpm HD, 14.1in 1024x768 LCD, Intel 950, CDRW/DVD, Intel 802.11abg wireless, Modem, 1Gb Ethernet, UltraNav, Secure chip, 6c Li-Ion batt, WinXP Pro

That is a fairly basic T60. You can do better for not much more money, for example; (I recommend this seller by the way)

The T60's are very similar in weight to the T40 series. There was a recent post comparing weights ...

I use a T60 (2007-7KU) as my main machine and like it so much that I got another one while the getting's good, and keep it in a drawer, taking it out monthly to fire it up, let it warm up to make sure the moisture's not going to damage it. Mine is a 15" model with the awesome FlexView IPS display which makes all other laptop displays look *really* second-rate by comparison.

I use it as a desktop-replacement machine, in a docking station on a ThinkPad adjustable laptop stand to raise the screen to eye-level. (Unfortunately that means that I have to use a separate 'desktop' keyboard which is nowhere as nice as the T60 keyboard.) I have maxxed the RAM to 3GB and put a 500GB 7,200rpm Seagate HDD in it.

I like them so much, and they're such a good bargain right now that I've even bought a third, 14" one (2007-CQ7) to take with me if I'm going to need a slightly more portable machine away from home. Speaking as someone who really doesn't like 'widescreen' laptops the T60 was the last, greatest laptop ever made, especially if you can go to a 15" model and get one with a FlexView (1400 x 1050) display.

IMHO you can't go wrong with a 4:3 T60. Good luck. :)

One of the best Thinkpads ever, IMO. I own two - my personal 15" Flexview and corporate-issued 14" SXGA+, which I still keep despite the fact that most guys in the company have already upgraded to something newer. I like it that much.

I like my T41 but I like my T60 more. I like its clean design and sturdiness, it's a very nice laptop.

I work in IT. My wife has a Macbook Pro 13" which is really nice.

I don't need a major laptop...I have a powerful desktop already.

That said I had a 14.1" T60 fall into my lap. I spent a bit of cash to upgrade the CPU to a T7200, SXGA screen and swap the motherboard from GMA950 to a X1400. I then added Wireless N. bluetooth and pushed the RAM to 3GB.

While I'd love a IPS screen (I rock a NEC 2490WUXI on my main PC)...it's not a priority for my laptop.

My T60 is very solid. I don't have to treat it with kid-gloves. While it's not going to play the latest games, I get an experience outside of that much like my quad core 3.8GHZ machine.

I was debating buying an Envy 14, and while I know it would be a more powerful machine; I don't think I am missing much for my needs.

As a main rig, I would need to upgrade. As my mobile rig, it's probably got way more horsepower than I need.

Although being a "P" user, I would say that I'm happy with the machine I have. It's good for the 3D programs and large illustration images, but it's not good for when I'm drawing pixel art, as the 1600x1200 is just to small to work with in an efficient way. It's a shame that it cannot be as sharp on other resolutions as it is on it's native, so I end up having to go back to my Toshiba Satellite with its 1024x768 when creating pixel art.

Although my T60 is a "p" model (like forum member: Worzyl's) - Can confirm I am a very proud & pleased owner since I purchased this notebook in 2006 - Can't see myself parting with this machine for now. Many friends and colleagues still admire the 4:3 aspect ratio Flexview IPS panel. :thumbs-UP:

I recently "upgraded" from a T43 15" IPS to a T60 15" IPS, and I am very satisfied so far. A clean and nice look, so basically they kept the style that I loved from the T43 and on the other hand improved the hardware and some of the features. And I no longer have to fear the potential loose chips known from the T4x machines. My plans are to first add a SSD disk, and at a later point upgrade to W7. Maybe I even buy another T60, who knows.

The only drawback is that the design and coloring on some of the buttons on the keyboard/navigation pad isn't as good as it was on the T4x machines. But it's overall a nice, sturdy and recommendable machine, and I have already given several people recommendations about actually buying T60 machines that have been for sale around.

Hello,

I'm the happy owner of a T42, a T23, a 600E, and other machines. I own a T60 too.

That's a very nice machine. I love its sturdiness (the rollcage technology is very effective). In fact, it seems sturdier than the T42, an excellent thing. I'm currently searching for a T60 with an SXGA+ display (14"), because mine is only XGA. It's the only reason why I still use the T42 so often (and the fact that I have 5 batteries, and that it's in better shape - the previous owner of my T60 wasn't careful).

Another thing I like with the T60 : It's very silent, if I don't play with it (the game I play is WoW, with a GMA 945).

All in all, I recommend this Thinkpad if you can find an SXGA+ display.

W.

EDIT : I have an SXGA+ screen on my T60 now, and that's way much better, when using Windows 7. :)

Very satisfied with t60 with ''flexview'' IPS screen. Love the tactile feel of the keyboard and the screen. It is a lifesaver right now as my desktop PC blew up in a blaze of smoke and sparks. Battery life is poor but I have an Asus netbook when a long life battery is a requirement.

I have a T60p which is just like a T60 but with a p on the end. I have to agree with the others here - I used to have a T42p and the T60p feels much sturdier. I'm very happy with mine - it has a 14in SXGA+ display, a T7600 CPU, 4GB of RAM (3GB usable) and a Western Digital Scorpio Black 160GB hard drive. It has more power than I need for my day to day activities (I work in IT), but enough to run the games I like at a reasonable pace. It runs Windows 7 very well too.

You'd be able to upgrade a T60 to a similar specification to my T60p apart from the graphics chip, which will need a motherboard replacement. May as well find a T60p or better if want to go that far.

I have to admit that I'd find it unpleasant to go back to a XGA 1024x768 display so yeah, if your eyes are okay with a SXGA+ 1400x1050 display, definitely go for it.
