Maybe this was in a place where a fire broke out, and it is covered in fire extinguisher foam?

Yes, that seems to be exactly what this is. Dry powder from an extinguisher.

This kind of dry powder is corrosive when left on metal, especially when the item gets in contact with humidity, and it also enters every little crack and opening. So I dare not imagine what the electronics inside this Thinkpad look like. Just look at the brown stuff coming out around the battery. I would say that there is probably not a single component in this laptop, except from maybe plastic parts, that will be in working condition now.

That's also why you don't want your old car back after you have fired off a dry powder extinguisher inside it to put out a fire..

A ThinkPad Protection warranty upgrade would have come in handy for that one! Yikes.

Overclocking went wrong?
It's certainly a different approach to remove the harddrive than often seen!

It would be really interesting to hear the story, even though the laptop is not ever going to work again.

Laughs. Serious overclocking and hard drive upgrade project that really took off.

Yes, this laptop seems to have been subject to a series of unfortunate events before it died. An interesting story, I would think.
