Matshita Drive won't recognize many regular CD's in my T60

#1 Post by backdoorman » Tue Oct 12, 2010 4:59 am

The drive won't even recognize many, especially older, regular music Cd's. It just goes nah, nah and the LED is blinking then it stops without doing anything. Under "My computer" it seems like there's nothing in the drive. Same result no matter how many times I try or reboot.

I have a Matshita UJ-852 drive and I do have upgraded the firmware to RB02 using the bootable ISO disc created from lenovos support and downloads. Seems like there's some kind of block making it refusing certain kind of discs.
I can add that there's not a single scratch or hairmark on the discs, so condition of discs can't be an issue here.
Really frustrating....

What can I do except buying a new drive?

A new drive is probably you best bet, but in that case I would go for an external USB2.0 drive (DVD-RW for + and -).
You'll be able to use that anywhere, the (external) drives are more solid, and if you get a travel bezel, your laptop will be lighter as well.

Very strange that it has to be replaced, almost not been used at all.

What good USB drive should I choose? Anything in peticular to consider?

If you remove the first three and the last letter of the drive's brand name, you will see the reason.
These units are so small, that the slightest misalignment can cause severe problems.

This one gets good reviews: Samsung Slim External DVD Writer SE-S084
Or you can go all out, and buy an external BlueRay DVDRW drive.

LOL, I'm not to happy with another gadget though. Is it possible to replace the original internal with something better?

Are you the original owner of this T60? If you aren't, perhaps the previous owners used this drive a lot. Laptop optical drives malfunction easily, so I use them only when absolutely necessary, e.g. to install an operating system.

If you have already decided that the drive is useless, then you can attempt cleaning the lens. A cotton swab dipped in isopropyl alcohol and gently rubbed over the lens might be enough to save the drive.
