T60 will not power on

#1 Post by jmelton08 » Tue Oct 19, 2010 3:23 pm

I left my T60 running a few days ago and when I came home it had turned off. When I attempted to power it back on, nothing happened. I took the battery off for a few minutes then reattached it and when I hit the power button the battery light comes on half green half yellow and the plug light comes on green then they go out, nothing else, no fan noise no power on noises at all. After they light up one time and go out they do not light back up no matter how many times you press the power button again. If you take the battery back off and reattach it will do the same thing again. I've tried using just the power supply and it does nothing as well. Any helpful suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

well, you pretty much summarized the problem I have with my T60 (2008-Z78). Left it on, found it off, the only difference is that it happened a few hours ago, not a few days ago. The machine is out of warranty as of March this year.

I ruled out the battery and power supply since they work just fine with my T60p.

Any help will be appreciated.

Pull the memory, hard drive, wifi card, optical drive and battery. Hit the power button 10 times for a second, then one more time for 30 seconds. Plug the power back in and try to start it. If it does not beep, the board is most likely dead. If it does beep, try plugging things back in one at a time to see if you can find the problem component.

will do tomorrow. I actually planned doing something like that, but not exactly like that, hence the question: why the voodoo with 10 times for a second, and once for 30 seconds? I mean, looks like you suggest to do that for a good reason, I don't know that reason, can you point to those troubleshooting guides or whatnot that contain such wisdom?

THanks!

It's the voodoo wisdom of experience, not listed in any maintenance guides. It is designed to unload any on-board capacitors and to reset the systemboard.

Disassembled the thing. Found a coin under the motherboard. Assembled back. Works just fine.

Nope. It is a curious two-year-old in the house. I think now I know for sure why does the sterio in one of the cars thinks I am using the car phone (that I do not have), so no sound for me.
