T60 and T61 integrated Intel graphics

#1 Post by Muse » Sat Oct 30, 2010 12:23 pm

The T60 I have now has a 14.1" screen with integrated Intel 950 graphics and is displaying at 1400 x 1050. I'm looking to buy a T61. The specs I'm seeing for the Lenovo T61 765912U I'm looking at now, also with a 14.1" screen, but with integrated Intel Intel GMA X3100 graphics, has resolution listed as 1280 x 800. Isn't that significantly inferior? That's two steps down the available resolution chart in my T60's display settings. :|

The T61 is a wide screen model. The 2 screen resolutions available on that size are 1280X800 (WXGA) or 1440X900 (WXGA+). Most, but not all, of the WXGA+ machines are NVIDIA machines

Hell yeah! The 1400x1050 screen has 43.6% more pixels than 1280x800, meaning the former displays 43.6% more information. People who have been used to high-res screens have difficulty adjusting to lower resolutions, so I urge you avoid buying that particular T61.

If you can find a T61 with Intel graphics that gives 1440x900, that would be better. Still fewer pixels than 1400x1050, but you would definitely like it more than 1280x800.

Sounds like excellent information. Thank you! I will be patient and keep looking. :thumbs-UP:

Anything that has not a 4:3 ratio like 1024x768 or 1400x1050 or 1600x1200 is a widescreen machine.
There are a few 4:3 T61 machines around, but these are as rare as hen's teeth!

Well, I found a T61 machine that the seller represents as having Intel graphics and a 15.4" WSXGA+ TFT screen featuring 1680x1050 resolution. Is the seller misinformed about the machine or is this legit? I suspect that either it's not really 1680x1050 or that it really has nVidia graphics or both. It's not cheap but it may be the right choice for me. However, if it's not what's represented it would be a bummer for me to have to pay shipping costs to return it. :| What do you guys think? Is this possible or is the seller incorrect in the representation of the machine?

What is the exact 7-character Model/Type (like 6460-5H1) of that machine?

WSXGA+ (1680x1050) is a legit LCD resolution for a 15.4" widescreen T61.
WXGA and WSXGA+ can run on an Intel GPU.
There's even WUXGA (1920×1200) available, not sure though if that also runs on Intel GPU.

It is possible. I have a 6465-CTO that came with WXGA (1280 x 800), but I swapped a WSXGA+ LCD. Only the new panel was required (same cable, inverter, etc.)

It is possible that as a CTO (custom to order), the WSXGA+ LCD was selected. To find out for sure before buying, you can run the type (6465) plus the serial number through the Lenovo warranty page, then check the parts lookup for that exact machine. Then check the FRU for the LCD. (Of course, the LCD could have been swapped after it left Lenovo, too.)

I will tell you that the Intel GPU w/WSXGA+ runs fast and cool, plus it supports over 3GB of RAM.

Good luck.

My lookup reveals this page. The LCD does indeed seem to be as represented. I can't tell what the graphics processing is (i.e. Intel vs nVidia). Is it determinable from this information?

Muse, I thought you wanted to stick with 14.1". The 15.4" T61 is much larger than your 14.1" T60. For 14.1" T61, only two resolutions are available: 1280x800 and 1440x900.

My 6465CTO has served me well with an LG WSXGA+ screen @ 1680x1650 (FRU: 42T0416 OEM: LP154W02-TL06). Although my main gripe has been how dark the LG version is, it's supposed to be even brighter than the Samsung version. I would avoid the latter.

There's no info I can see who the mfg is of the LCD at Lenovo's S/N lookup page. I suppose I'll have to take my chances if I pull the trigger.

Well, the WSXGA+ has a lot more pixels and the screen's bigger. Mostly it's to serve as a desktop replacement, so the extra size's downside isn't that significant compared with the advantages, is my impression. Heck, it occurs to me that the prices I'm seeing on some of the T60 14.1's I'm seeing makes me think I should maybe get one of those too. I'm going to have at least an extra 60GB HD and RAM to run it and there are some out there without HDs or RAM. I could use it in another room and have backup for an event like this one where a system goes down. I have 3 adapters for my T60. I suppose they'd work with the T61, but I think that comes with one of its own.

Edit: I went ahead and bought the 6465CTO machine (T61). Thanks to all for the help!

I believe you mean 1680 x 1050.

Do you think the Intel graphics (x3100 I believe) with the 965 chipset will adequately support Windows 7 (e.g. 64 bit)?

I'm finding the screen brightness adequate, and as you said, I have the LG version. I will be using it with AC almost all the time and with AC it's considerably brighter (than when running on the battery), not a problem for me.

Muse,
the reason for the display being dim when using battery is a setting in BIOS. You can change that. To enter BIOS, press F1 when you see the ThinkPad splash screen during start-up.

Still, even with BIOS brightness set to high, and running on AC, I find the screen dark. Going by past experience here, others agree with me. Personally, I transferred to my T61 from a VAIO with an XBRITE glossy screen, it was quite a change. I still wish for an equal, or better, resolution screen that is brighter. If someone can point out one, I might even do an upgrade (I've posted my desire about that too).

I suppose it has everything to do with the brightness of your surroundings. If it's bright around me I require a much brighter display setting. Ordinarily I compute in muted light settings, so it's rarely an issue with the brightness of my displays. Plus, I'm 99% of the time on AC, which helps a lot with brightness, at least the way I'm set up.

I occasionally check the brightness of this T60's display. Is there a way to find out what it is without changing it? To check the setting I press Fn+Home (raises brightness one detent and shows the new setting) or Fn+End (reduces the brightness one detent and shows the new setting). I figure there must be a way to display the setting without changing it! Anybody know?

BTW, I'm curious to know if there's a place, a PDF or whatever where the features of my T60 (and T61 now) are gathered together. IIRC, this T60 didn't come with anything like a comprehensive printed manual of instruction, a compendium of the feature set. There was documentation concerning safety features, a couple of other things, but no "manual!" Is it all buried in the ThinkVantage software?
