Backlight or inverter?

I've a similar problem like this guy. I have a T60 2007-63G. Until yesterday it worked like a charm. Now, when I power it on, the backlight works for some time but I can hear a whirring sound and after 30-60 seconds the backlight switches off. As long the it is on, the colors are correct, the screen is not reddish or something like that.

The T60 is from 2006 so more than 4 years old but apart from this problem (and of course the accu pack died), that thing is still rock solid and fast enough for most tasks.

I really think of replacing either the inverter or the backlight. Problem is that I've seen the inverter for $89 while the backlight seems a bit cheaper but is much more difficult to replace.

Can someone help me to decide which component to replace? Thanks in advance!

Frank, welcome to the forum. I'd try an inverter first based on your description of the symptoms, but $89 sounds like highway robbery. What's the FRU# for your inverter?

Harryc, thanks for your answer. The inverter is labeled with: FRU P/N: 41W1010.

Ok, I've replaced the inverter but same symptoms, so it is indeed the backlight. Unfortunately replacing the backlight sounds much more difficult but I think I will try it anyway.
