Fingerprint reader not working in T60

I get a message that there's a hardware problem every time I try to scan my fingers. One time it said there was a software problem. I figure it might not be plugged in (I just got the used system). Device Manager says the device is working properly and IDs the driver as December 2009, 1.9.2.136. Is it possible that the device isn't plugged in or does "working properly" mean it already IS plugged in?

If you can see the device in BIOS, that means it's plugged properly.

Furthermore, if the Device Manager has it listed, I'd presume that it's plugged, but may or may not be working OK...that part I never trust a 100%...had seen one too many devices that were working "properly" when they actually were not...
