Fingerprint reader not working in T60

I get a message that there's a hardware problem every time I try to scan my fingers. One time it said there was a software problem. I figure it might not be plugged in (I just got the used system). Device Manager says the device is working properly and IDs the driver as December 2009, 1.9.2.136. Is it possible that the device isn't plugged in or does "working properly" mean it already IS plugged in?
