Gordon Bennet - Just hosed my BIOS! ***UPDATE***

Well, the USB transfers on my T61p (8891) were slower than molasses and the wireless network performance was equally poor (my other T61p - 8889 is spec'd identically and it is fine). I updated all of the software from the Lenovo support site as well as Vista - no difference. As a last ditch resort, I thought I'd try a BIOS update. Well, the update software went "Not Responding" in the middle of the upgrade and now I have nothing. The fan spins when I turn the computer on but no splash screen or anything else. Nice paperweight.....................
I called lenovo - it's still under warranty so I hope this time they do as well as they have before. I'll keep you all posted on my experience with the service department.

Sorry to hear that, but I bet you did a BIOS update from within Windows?
There have been many warnings against that, and to use the bootable CD instead....

Yes, I did (as I've done many times before). I read the instructions before I did it - they state to use the diskette BIOS upgrade (who has a floppy disk drive any more?) only if you have Vista x64 or Win 7 x64 (!) Oh well, I'll know not to do that again........................

Thanks Harry.... would have been nice for them to have appropriate instructions in drivers page to use only the CD update even with non-64 bit operating systems!

The box for the warranty repair on my T61p arrived Tuesday morning and I mailed the computer back to Lenovo around 10.00am. Lenovo received it the following morning, repaired it within a couple of hours and mailed it back to me overnight. I received it 10.00am Thursday morning - 48 hours after my dropping off at the the UPS store. Looks like they replaced the motherboard and wireless card and ran a load of tests on it. Appears to be working fine.
So it's days like this I'm glad I stuck with Lenovo!
