T60 can't turn on!

#1 Post by akoei » Fri Nov 26, 2010 10:18 am

I have a T60 can't turn on.
It worked well a week ago, then I just closed the lid and put it somewhere. But today when I press the power button, it looks like good Thinkpad, most of indicators are on and off, and then, nothing is displayed, the LCD screen is totally black, looks the hardware is not initialized itself.
I then wait long time enough, but can't see HD indicator has any blinking, CapsLock and NumLock indicators also can't be turned on by pressing keys. The CD-ROM is powered, I can eject it; RJ45 is powered, link/act light is blinking; USB is powered, can drive a portable USB disk on; a bit warm on the keyboard; but nothing else I can do...

Could someone tell me where the problem could be?

First thing to try is to unplug the ac adapter and remove the battery. Then press and hold the power button for 30 seconds. Reinsert the battery and plug the ac adapter back in, then press the power button and see if it powers up.
I lost count...

Thought maybe the type number would give me a clue as to what is going on...but, it didn't.

Try connecting an external monitor to see if the problem is with the internal display or not. Do you see anything at all on the display? Lenovo splash? Anything?

Just systematically eliminate every possible cause by removing everything you can. RAM, HDD, PCI cards, etc., and see what happens. Then start putting stuff back one item at a time starting with one stick of RAM, and see which component makes a difference, if any do.

I have removed HD, RAM, same, just nothing could be displayed, no matter LCD or external monitor.

Looks BIOS issue?

Bad news, but it's probably system board failure. Unusual with that model, but still...

Good idea to get a second opinion from someone with more knowledge than I.

The good news is you can find a working motherboard on eBay for close to $50-100.

I am very surprised you had a failure...but closing the lid has been known to cause the ThinkPad to overheat if it still remains running. My sister-in-law did the same thing with a T61, then put it in her back-pack, and left it for a day. Lenovo did eventually repair it under warranty but it took many phone calls and escalation before they agreed to fix it.

If you hurry...there is one in Toronto ending in two hours.

Good luck...

Humm, I need to consider if it's worth changing MB, and I think it wouldn't as easy as desktop...

It is not as hard as you think...my first one seemed hard. But, it you take it apart, keep all the screws with the correct part you took out you should do OK. There are some video's on YouTube on how to exhange a ThinkPad motherboard.

Or, you can sell it on the forum as-is and buy another T60. IMHO the T60 is one of the better ThinkPads. In fact the T60p 15" is outstanding. Perhaps one of the forum members will make you a deal for trading yours for a working unit.

Good luck with your choice. Let us know what you end up doing.
