"Ultranav" on T60p ??

#1 Post by dozer » Tue Dec 07, 2010 10:04 pm

howdy folks,

Is the pad-setup on my T60p an "Ultranav" ? ...or some other model-name?

I ask because I'm perusing the driver-update pages at lenovo, in advance of finally :P updating myself from win2k to XP.....and on the "Ultranav" page, they say I don't need to install the Trackpoint driver if I have an "Ultranav". Yet they neglect to indicate which models on their list do or do not have that model-name of touchpad.

I've had problems with my pad, where it suddenly moves the cursor on its own, all the way one direction...and I lose the ability to move it myself in that axis. I had to disable it in drvr-mgr.

Tried to use it again some time later, and a while after booting, it suddenly went wonky in the same way again.

So I've not used the pad for a couple years.

But since I'm about to update to XP, and thinking it may've been a driver/OS glitch rather than a hdw failure, I'm trying to be sure I get the exact right driver setup with this move to XP.

I cannot recall whether I installed a 'Trackpoint driver' or not, back when. Nor do I know whether I even have a -pad- driver installed!....or whether I'm somehow using some sort of built-in driver of win2000's.

In drv-mgr, I have only a single driver under 'Mouse', and it's named confusingly....

"Ultranav Pointing Device"

One assumes it's a pad driver...but 'pointing device' and 'trackpoint' have a closeness...

note; it's odd....I remember two devices being listed, and turning one of them (the pad) off. But as I look at the listings in drvr-mgr, there's only the one mentioned above, with no mention of 'trackpoint' (which is what I'm using!).

Perhaps I'm recalling something in control-panel rather than drvr-mgr....but I'm not going to invest time in this mystery now, since I move to XP in a day or three.

So, I'd like to confirm exactly which driver(s) I should install with XP-sp3(32), and which to leave off.

Also, if anyone has seen the pad-problem I described, and discovered its cause with some certainty, please let me know. If I need new hdw....sigh....I'd like to know and start shopping for it.

thanks much,
Richard

The touchpad stuff is the ultranav. The red thing in the middle of the keyboard and the buttons at the bottom of the keyboard is a trackpoint

yup, knew that, but thanks.

My question was about different 'versions' of the touchpad. The lenovo driver-page gave the impression that there was more than one kind.... the 'Ultranav' touchpads and the....??

Perhaps I misunderstood what their text was saying/implying.

I think the confusion was related to Lenovo's use of the terms. A touchpad is a touchpad. Their drivers work on both T series and R series machines. Some of the R models don't have touchpads
