So i have a T60p 8742 (widescreen) laptop and the fan is making this rattling or grindig sound. I think i'm going to replace it sooner or later and my question is, that can i replace with a different one? The heatsink and fan part name is 41w6409 but the original part costs too much (currently an uni student). So i decided to replace only the fan and keep the heatsink. The problem is that i can't find a fan that is made for my heatsink, so i was wondering weather i could use a different fan (41w6407 or some other) in my heatsink and would it fit and work?

You'll want to stick with a fan for your discrete GPU on the T60P. So, that is either FRU# 41V9932 or 41W6407. Here's just a fan and the seller ships worldwide - http://cgi.ebay.com/New-IBM-Thinkpad-CP ... 2a0b8f9197

That part is for 41W6407, but my heatsink is 41W6409 according to lenovos website. Will that part fit in my heatsink and work without problems?

I was thinking that the main difference is tha my laptop is a widescreen model, but the 41W6407 heatsink is for a regular screen model. Are the fans in the heatsink identical?

The copper cooler parts for regular and WS are different, but the fan itself should be the same for both models.

Thanks for the responses. I'm probably going to do the cleaning and oiling thing before the fan arrives, but as far as i know, this is a temporary solution. As the laptop is my main computer and is essential for my uni studies, i'm not going to risk with it and i am going to change the fan.

My thinkpad T60p has a bad fan (41V9932) and I need to replace it completely. I'm looking at the IBM/Lenovo support site and can't figure out how to order a new one:
