I currently have a t61 with 4gb RAM and 320gb hd, 7200rpm (I think it's the scorpio black?) windows 2003 server.

I have a 2nd hard drive on the caddy, a 640gb 5400 rpm.

I run a mostly vms (3 at most), and just have a browser on my base OS.

Will I see any benefit if I upgrade to an SSD and keep my VMs on the 640gb hard drive in the caddy?

(can I keep my windows 2003, or is it better if I uprade to windows ?)

thanks.

For his Christmas present, I upgraded my son's T60 from 80gb HDD to a 256gb SSD I was able to purchase here on the Forum. His T60 is like a different machine now -- very speedy. Although I also upgraded his Vista to W7, I don't believe that accounts for the dramatic difference in speed. I have previously replaced the HDD in my husband's X61s with a SSD, and he kept his Vista install. His X61s is also a much faster/snappier machine with the SSD, even keeping his Vista install.

I don't have any experience (or understanding) of how a second HDD would affect your machine's performance. But my personal experience when trading out HDD for SSD (which I have done with all the ThinkPads in my signature line) has been that each machine's performance improves clearly enough that this average user can "see" the difference.

There is a very nice 256gb SSD currently available for a good price on the Forum here: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.ph ... 31#p609731
I actually wanted it myself, but I'm 'tapped-out' after Christmas :|

There is also a 60bg SSD available here: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=92815

There is also a 160gb SSD available here: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=90814

Lots of very good choices -- Post back if you decide to upgrade :)
