Check number of RAM modules from within Windows XP?

#1 Post by T39andcounting » Fri Jan 07, 2011 5:55 am

My team is geographically dispersed, and most of us have T60s, T61s or T400s, most with 2GB RAM. I've had a look under the keyboard of mine and it has 2 x 1GB modules. We need to upgrade to 3GB (which I believe is the max under WinXP 32Bit), and a lot of the team are less technical than I.

Is there a simple way of checking the number of RAM modules installed from within Windows without taking the screws out and popping the keyboard off so we know what to order?

Ideally we'd order 2GB for anyone with 2 x 1GB installed, then move the spare the 1GB modules to anyone with a single 2GB module installed.

Thanks!

CPUZ will tell you. First of all, memory tab will probably say "dual" if there are two modules (even if unequal), "single" otherwise. Furthermore, the SPD tab allows you to see separately for each slot whether it is populated or empty.

It is true that "Dual" indicates two RAM slots are populated. But you don't get any information on the SPD tab because it is empty. From T6x, X6x series, Lenovo BIOS prevents software from reading SPD data, and I don't know why they do it.

I ran the Belarc Advisor software on my T60 for totally different reasons earlier today, and noticed it gave me the following information, just what OP is looking for:

2048 Megabytes Usable Installed Memory

Slot 'DIMM 1' has 1024 MB
Slot 'DIMM 2' has 1024 MB
