64-bit operating system on IBM THinkpad T60p, possible?

Hello there,
I had a look at a T60p today, a replacement for my dead T30 (on another thread on this forum).
It is a Type 2008-87G, processor T2600 (2.16GHz), if "06/12" means manufactured at the end of 2006 then I it is 4 years old.

I have to questions:

1. the vendor says the graphic is 512MB but I can't find any reference on the Lenovo Support Site webpage for this model (here: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-62487 ). It looks like 256MB is the maximum shipped with this laptop or I am missing something?

2. does it support 64-bit operating systems? I would like to install Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit and possibly Ubunto on a dual-boot HD. I see that from the webpage linked above it seems to be possible but wanted to ask if anybody here has a first hand experience installing Win7 64-bit on the T60p.

Thank you in advance for your help.

This is the wrong place for this thread... You are in the T20/T30 forum section... Not the T60 section...

Would a moderator please move this?

I believe it is a 256MB card, but it can borrow another 256MB from the system memory, giving it 512MB of memory.

With a 64bit CPU, the T60p can indeed run a 64 bit OS. The T2600 is not a 64 bit CPU, but you certainly could swap in a bit Core 2 Duo like the T5500 or T7200 to name a couple.

Giday Wit*....
I have had few T60P's since '06..... few too many infact !

a) REGARDLESS of what the VENDOR says ......best way to find out what the FACTORY AS SHIPPED status is via here:
.....http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... -WARNTY#sw

- Place your machine MODEL & SERIAL numbers (from back of machine) in that page
- it will tell you DATE OF MFG/SHIPPED DATE ( which determines the Warranty commence date)
- It will also tell you the REAL AS SHIIPED FACTORY PARTS LIST.... and OS etc
----- to get your (as shipped parts list) ,,,,,, click on link "View parts lookup results for this system" at the bottom of that above linked screen

AFAIK....T60p = came with max=256MB video memory from factory on ALL MODELS. Not sure where and how one would fit 512MB Video Memorty Chip - only way to do that would be "non Standard" parts - AFTER MARKET Motherboard !!!!
But then there might been some T60p models in EUROPE or Asia with 512Video Memory - am not aware of!...

b) x64 Winodws can only work on 64bit Processors...intel website will give you a Difinitive answer .... :(
Short Answer = NO !!!

Hope this helps !
Cheers

Thank you FredGarvin for speedy reply.
In the meanwhile I checked the ark.intel.com website and it confirmed what you just said about the processor. It looks like a T7200 or T7400 are the ones to go for to upgrade to 64-bit but this will add at least £80 (and more than £100 for the T7400) on top of the price of the machine. The laptop was offered to me at £170 (270 USD) which, if it was a 64-bit as I initially though, it would have been a bargain. Oh, well....

You certainly do a T5500 or T5600, which will be less expensive and unless you're pushing the CPU frequently, it's likely you won't notice a difference between those and a T7x00 CPU.

thank you. I actually posted (or I believe I did...) a reply asking to delete the other thread as I just re-posted here... don't know where it has gone perhaps I click the "cancel" button instead but thanks for cleaning up and sorry for the inconvenience.

Re the forum rules: I am members of a few forum and I am aware that duplicates are not permitted, it was an honest mistake.

Thanks for the tip, I see there are a few on ebay for around £30 like this one: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/INTEL-CORE-2-DUO- ... 4155a3239b

Would there be anything else needing upgrading? For example the fan/heatsink or I can use the same one?

Perhaps a fresh application of thermal paste, but that's about it.

so basically any 64-bit processor from the T7000 series here:
http://ark.intel.com/ProductCollection. ... ries=23516
will fit the t60p as they all fit the same socket (PBGA479, PPGA478) if I read this correctly?

Not all of those will work. Only the T7200, T7400 and T7600 are compatible with the T60p. The others like the T7100 are socket P CPUs and are not compatible. You can also do the T5500 and T5600. Those will be less expensive and unless you're doing things that hits the CPU hard, you probably won't notice much of a difference between any of them.

Just a reminder that the T60p, even with a 64 bit CPU and operating system, will not exceed 3gb RAM (the chipset is the limiting factor).

will have to consider this also, thank you.

Looking under the column "Socket" in the Intel Webpage ( http://ark.intel.com/ProductCollection. ... ries=23516 ) all the T7000 series have the same two numbers, I thought this will make them all interchangeable.
I mean: the T7100 has the same ref PBGA479, PPGA478 as the T7600 or the T7200, I thought this means I can swap these two processors or things are more complicated that I expected?

Definitely more complicated! While the socket may be phsically the same, the pin-out configuration is definitely different. The CPUs for the T60's (T5500, T7200, etc.) are Socket-M and the others (T7100, T7300) are Socket-P. They may fit, but definitely won't work.

From Wikipedia:
Relation to other sockets: Although it may seem identical, Socket M is not pin-compatible with the older desktop Socket 478 or the newer mobile Socket P; it is also incompatible with most versions of the older mobile Socket 479. Pentium III-M processors designed for the first version of Socket 479 will physically fit into a Socket M, but are electrically incompatible with it. Although conflicting information has been published, no 45nm Penryn processors have been released for Socket M.
The C2D 1.66GHz T5500 and C2D 1.83GHz T5600 are very good options. They run cool and both perform as well or better than CD 2.0GHz T2500 CPUs.

I would have to say without a serious system upgrade, then no.

Hiya Tom,
Musta !....
can you confirm that you see $GB ( or close to it) as AVALIBLE in Win7 "SYSTEM"
please-? > or do you still see MAX of 3GB ?? curious

On sysinfo you can see 4GB installed .... but on win7 its say 3GB is only available

@ Tom;
thanks for confirming that; just wanted to make sure.......
Note: Only 64-bit operating systems support more than 3GB of system memory (RAM). However the Intel Chipsets 945GM and 945PM do not support more than 3GB system memory (RAM), even when a 64-bit operating system is installed.

I have 2 x 2008 model T60p with Intel Core2Duo T7200(2GHz), and Intel Core2Duo T7500(2.2GHz); and still only uses 3GB.

SO ....(13GB memory)the rest of the spare memory , I ise the RAM DISK as my "SSD" and its super fast!!!!

@ausmike.... kamusta na rin kabayan ?

May I ask....what particular model of SSD that you use on your T60p?... How much ?

Im planning to get one to use as main drive for OS and the 500GB 7200.4 on the Ultrabay adapter for files

Hiya TOM
> sorry mate - no a pinoy > so dont know tooo much tagalog ! :P:P
juz kow few basic phrases since I travel a lot ..... and love Phil beaches also:D

Most all my SSD = intel (work laptops) or OCZ (personal use)....

T60p (model 2008-15'+ 2007-14') runs Win7+ Suse Linux+ OS-X multi boot ..... both laptops with Kigston Hyper-X memory(8GB -cl4's)....

w510S & w710 = RUNS - Suse Wktn + Win7 x64....RAID SSDs and 16 or 32 GB memory
- most of these are used for work and I have one W510CTO (ex work laptop) for personal use with BlueRay + multitouch ....blah blah ,,,

If you have a T60... the best way in my view:....
a) laod as much memory you cna afford (now u can get 4G DDR2 chips so max can be 8G)
b) SSD = can be as small as u want = BOOT DRIVE ONLY
c) use Ultrabay Drive = to store things ......
d) use one of Linux Disto (i use Suse as thats what I get to use @ work) T60 = The ONLY FACTORY ISSUED LINUX DRIVERS by IBM !!!! me I not a windows fan but have to use to do work stuff etc etc - win7 = only my 2nd time windows use!!! [[/i]
......Best and cheapest way to get MAX Speed for value

Cheers mate

@ausmike... many thanks for the reply and info :D

will try to look for an Intel SSD on amazon.com and clone my Momentus 500GB win7 Ultimate 64-bit OS install to the SSD.
