Is it possible to buy a T61 cover 14" with a intergated webcam and install it on aT61 witout a webcam? Any drawbacks? Anyone ever done it?
BTW The T42 problem was resolved it was the caddy.

Are you talking about the whole assembly? No problem. The only parts that are different on camera-equipped models are the LCD cable, the camera bezel and the camera module itself.

Richk So if I buy a cover with the lcd.camera and cables as a unit I just have to switch the cover and plug in the cable and go to lenovo for the software ? The mobo is the same? I am very happy with my present T61 but having to carry a usb web cam is a pain.

It will only work on the wide screen model. If you have a wide screen there is a forum member that has all the parts.

I guess I am SOL then. Guess I will have to buy a T61 with a web cam swap out my hdd and 4gig of memory and sell my exisiting one and hope I at least break even or only lose a few bucks. Thanks for your help !!

Just double checking here is the specs for my T61 (7658-03U) can someone please verify that I DO NOT have a wide screen model? Thank you !!

You have the 14.1" wide screen model. That is the only size the camera DOES fit into. If you swap the complete lid, it will work. You need the camera driver and communication utility 1.6 or above from Lenovo

Richk Are you positive??? I am very happy if it a sure thing!! I have a friend with a complete cover with camera and cover bezel etc.

RBS I just visited the "board room" wow you guys do take care of ya own!!! I wish I had some boards to donate !! I just refurbed a T42 for my DD and a R52 for my youngest GS. When He graduates next year I will buy him a BN IBM not sure what model but it must have a web cam!! It is the only way we can see GS's! Iwill ask here when I am rwdy to buy since the regs here know what is best!!

Something is wrong I think!! New memory came today (4gb) when I went to install it I found 2 screws missing from hinge! SO being a very suspicious person. I went to device manager and it show my display as Standared PNP monitor. I installed Belarc and it also says generic PNP monitor. Now if I am supposed to have wide screen should the descrition been different? Could the monito have been switched? Richk said it waas wide screen acording to what was posted by me,which I copied from the Lenove site by entering my type 7658-03U. Ihave been in contact with Bruce for hte camera parts but cannot afford to make a mistake!! Any suggestions?

Dang I forgot to ask !! Can the 1gb chip I tok out of the T61 be used in the T42 I gave DD?

I just installed the upgrade parts in my T61 Widescreen...took about two hours as it was my first time. My eBay camera did not come with a screw and that took a little hunting to round up. Thank heavens for spare screws.

In the process I broke off some of the tabs from the old lcd bezel...a little tricky to fish them out. The replacement bezel was not perfect but was advertised as such on eBay. I also broke some of the metal tabs on the top of the metal frame...but it all went back together OK.

The video says to pry off the top cover first which I did not do. I think either way those little tabs are subject to breaking. Be very careful.

After getting it all back together Windows 7 found the camera and SKYPE activated it just fine. Now I have a nice little SKYPE machine and a fairly decent ThinkPad.

You don't need to fully follow the video directions on how to remove the LCD...just be more gentle than me. Installing the new video cable, camera, and bezel is pretty straight forward and can be done without totally removing the lcd. If you are upgrading the lcd now would have been the time to do it...but I am happy with the standard WXGA lcd.

I hope this helps you with your upgrade parts you found on the forum...you did buy them?

Bill Yes I prchased the kit from Bruce I have a tracking number and it is enroute. I hear ya on taking the lappy apart!! I fix them for friends so I have to do my darnest to keep them from looking "Ghetto" I have takeen quite a few T models down to barebones. When I get t the point I am stuck, I just put it away and think for a bit. I learned the hard way it is best not to work when you are frustrated !! I just go back to the other computer and reread the manual to see what I missed.The T61 will be replacing my Dell 1521 so it is not like I have to finish it with in a specific time frame. I have several other laptops and desktops at my disposal!! No I am not a pack rat I just like my toys!! Thanks for steering me to Bruce!!
Now if you can steer me to a ribbon cable for a i 1400 TP a little 7 year old boy will be happy!!

Update: I would follow the Lenovo video instrctions and pry off the top lid first...I think there will be less of a possibility for damage.

Bill Thanks for the update ! I think I will start disassembly tomorrow afternoon as I will be snowed in!! Once I take the front bezel off I will have a much better understanding of the job at hand. I am very confident of my ability to follow the manual and to know when to back off. Too many peeps try just a tad too long and something goes snap!1 The ya go a "Ghetto job" I just replaced the back cover and front bezel on my 1521 cause my 16 month granddaughter snapped it off over the Xmas holiday !! I just love that she enjoys computers!! I will post an update tomorrow evening. Thanks again Bill

Bill Started 3 am all stripped by 3:25 am no parts broken ! Will post after the new aprts arrive and are installed, around 3 pm. Gonna get some sleep as I get up at 5:00 am. I chose not to remove the back.

Bill I can't figure something out !! Where does the camera physically connect to the cable ? Or is the connection wireless? Old cable and new cable are exactly the same. No where can I find a connection on the camera to fit the white plug on the cable!!

Houston we have a problem!!!!!
My screen has a green backround to it with the web cam installed!! Also my desktop has red and green "spider viens" (best I can describe it) I went to system update and it found the camera and installed new drivers. The camera works but the screen is totally up screwed!!
