Hi guys,

I am in the process of buying a T60 from someone.

It is a 1951-AK6
S/N L3-C7610

With the parts lookup page, i found out that the current CPU is an T1300 (FRU: 41W1140). The mainboard in the T60 is FRU: 41V9912

The T7300 i have is an SLA45


Will this work? I can't find out which FSB the T1300 is running, because i only have the FRU number, and all the hits Google is giving me are about buying this FRU.

No. You need a socket M Core Duo or Core 2 Duo. The T7300 is a socket P cpu. It will physically fit in the socket, but the machine won't boot. The pin-out is different between socket M and sockt P processors.

T2300, T2400, T2500, T2600, T2700, T5500, T5600, T7200, T7400, T7600 will work.

I recommend the T5500 Core 2 Duo at least. It runs Win 7 Pro 32-bit quite nicely.

Note: Update the BIOS to current before swapping the CPU (I found that out the hard way).

I thought i had found a nice T5500, but when i looked at the photo's of the ad, it was in fact a T5550 (mind the extra '5')

Unfortunately, not a chance! The T5550 is a Socket P CPU, not a Socket M, as you need.

Just changed the T1300 for an T5500 and it works fine

I only need to put in some other coolpaste, because with the pasta i currently got (something to put between transistors and coolingblocks) the CPU is getting quite hot ( 83 degrees Celsius )

I replaced the paste today with good Spire silver paste.

But the problem is still here: The T5500 is 79c when only having Chrome and MSN open.

The fan is free of dust, and the laptop is not on a piece of clothing or something. It is just running in the dock.



Anyone experienced this before and know how to fix it? It can't be normal that the CPU is at this temperature when doing not so much.

I am thinking that maybe the copper fan assembly isn't making good enought contact or something, however i have put the screws in tight

That is nowhere near normal. My money's on something having been botched during the upgrade.

Maybe it's a knock-off with falsified markings?
Have you checked it is completely in (and tightened), and that it has no bent/missing pins?

I've done several upgrades for T60s with T5500 and T5600 CPUs, they run at least as cool as the T2300 and T2400 CPUs they've replaced.

You only need the thinnest layer of thermal paste.

I will take the T60 apart again, and look for things that are not as they should be

The CPU was fine, no bent pins or missing pins.

Just out of curiosity, did you go across the heatsink to tighten the screws (think lug nuts on a tire), or did you go around the outside? I am wondering if you may have over-tightend one side, causing the other side to be lifted up. you may want to loosen the screws and go across, giving each screw a couple of turns at a time so that they all snug down properly.

I did it like the car wheel method I know if you tighten one screw, after that another... the heatsink will lift.



I took it apart and i think the problem is in the fan assembly.

I think this, because even with the T1300 processor in the T60, the temperature is 65 degrees Celsius directly after boot.

The current fan has these numbers:

I have tried bending the piece of the fan that is on top of the CPU, but it doesn't help. When i touch the copper part above the CPU it is quite hot (can't touch it for more than 15 seconds), so the CPU is transferring the heat to the fan assembly, but if i follow the heatpipe with my finger it is only mildly warm in the upper left corner.

Can anybody advice me which replacement fan i should get?

Your board should (have) come with a 41V9931 fan.
The previous bending (by you or a previous owner) might have cracked the heatpipe(s) and let the coolant out.
A new unit should do the trick.

Also, it seems like there's 4 different fan types:
41V9931 (for Intel graphics and Core Duo cpu)
41W6406 (for Intel graphics and Core 2 Duo cpu)
41V9932 (for ATI graphics and Core Duo cpu)
41W0467 (for ATI graphics and Core 2 Duo cpu)

The current fan in my T60 is the first one, but my T5500 is an Core 2 Duo, so i think i need the second one (41W6406). I looked up a picture of the 41W6406 and it has a double heatpipe on the CPU part, where my 41V9931 only has 1 heatpipe on that area

Can i just pop in an 41W6406 fan, or is there difference between fans regarding screen size?

Could anyone please confirm that a 41W6406 fan would solve my problem?

I am still having the overheating issue (as we speak the CPU is 77 degrees according to TPFanControl), so i would like to order an other fan a.s.a.p.


Edit: And what about a fan for an T60 with ATi GPU ? I found a 41W6407 for cheap, would that also fit my Intel graphics T60?

I will order the ATi fan and pray on my knees that it will solve the overheating issues.

UPDATE:

Received an 41V9932, wiped the cooler + CPU clean, and put on some fresh silver cool paste. Popped in the fan, assembled the laptop.


Result: 62 degrees idle, 72 degrees (Celsius ) with some programs (Chrome with 7 tabs, MSN, Outlook, Spotify)


I think something is wrong with my T60, but i can't figure out WHAT

However, it is a little upgrade, with the old cooler (41V9931) it was like 75 degrees idle, and would kick 88 degrees without much effort

Are there any parts (cooling clamp on underside of the mainboard for example) that can cause bad performance of the cooler? Or maybe a support frame or something like that?

Maybe you got the T5500-DeLuxe model with built-in central heating?
Could well be you have a bad CPU.
Beg/steal/borrow a T7200 for comparison.

When I upgraded from a T7250 to a T9300 I had the same sort of issues - idling really hot, dangerously high temps under load. It turns out that the T7250 is a tiny bit higher in the socket than the T9300 so to fix it I cut one of the very thin copper fins off an old heatsink and trimmed it down to the same size as the cpu core. I ended up with CPU > thermal paste > copper > thermal paste > heastsink, and its been running fine for months now - idles at around 40C, upto around 70C under load. Might be worth a try...
