Can T61 boot from pcmcia/cardbus ATA controller?

#1 Post by miamicanes » Thu Jan 27, 2011 8:17 am

Last night when I was trying out my new T61, I pulled my old 2-gig Toshiba Microdrive out of the closet and tried to boot from it... and discovered that the T61's BIOS didn't seen to have any obvious boot candidate for "pcmcia/cardbus ATA controller". Does/can it?

Also, I noticed something weird... I booted into Ubuntu10 with the drive connected, went into its drive manager, and noticed a SMART warning that the drive was being used outside of its design parameters (with no hint of what they were or how they were being violated). Any ideas? The drive itself seemed to work fine... I even copied its contents to the SSD, and it seemed to work fine.

(For what it's worth, I'm not actively trying to sell the microdrive since it's probably worth more at this point as a future geeky museum piece and curiosity than as a real computer peripheral given the fact that a (micro)SD card with double the capacity costs about $5 on sale ($10 if you get ripped off), but nevertheless feel free to PM me if you have a burning desire to own a piece of laptop history. ;-)
