Normal temp on T60-2007

#1 Post by Wiking » Thu Jan 27, 2011 12:35 pm

Hi,
I have Lenovo T60 2007-FUG. It has T5600 1.83GHz processor.
I started to worry about the temp because lately, I hear a lot the fan working. When I use speedfan to see the temp there are these values:
HD0: 32c
Temp1: 66c
Temp2: 64c
Core0: 53c
core1: 51c

these are the temperatures when I'm not doing something complicated on it.
Also, sometimes I hear strange noise from the fan that isn't typical for it (like knocking a little bit)
Your suggestions ?
Renew the thermal paste on the processor ? clean the fan area ?
And last, Does anybody know how to configure correctly speedfan on my T60 ?
Thanks for your help.
Lior

My T60 runs continuously at around 80 celsius (cpu/pwr) for one and a half year without using the fan at all. I have an integrated gpu.

80'C is extremely high for a processor, not above it's thermal design but very high indeed. My T2400 seems to run around 42'C at idle.

I haven't checked it fully loaded though.

Your temperature of 53/51 is not out of line, just one of two things.

First off, your fan is likely starting to wear out (the bearings are wearing down, making that knocking sound you are hearing). And two, because of the bearings, the fan will work harder to stay at max speed until the bearings over take it and it starts to slow down. When it slows down, it will move less air. Therefore, you will have a higher temperature. Also, the heatsink might be dirty, so heat transfer will decrease.

Might want to replace the fan and clean the heatsink as well as re-apply some thermal grease.

I would suggest giving HWmonitor a try, I find it's more accurate than SpeedFan plus it tells you what it's reading.

ok, just finished cleaning the fan and all the area from dust. Now, I see temps that are about 10 degree C less than before.
The knocks not always appear, sometimes only (for now rarely).
There is a better place than EBAY to buy a new fan ? Which thermal paste will be best ? Because I live in Israel (and now till summer in Ukraine) I'm able to pay only with paypal.

Also, I have an ATI X1400 on board.

Obviously you can also purchase a fan from Lenovo directly, at least in the US. I have no idea what your options are in Germany. I can also tell you that Lenovo retail laptop sales accepts Paypal, I don't know about parts sales. Arctic Silver 5 is a forum favorite thermal paste.

Wiking, seach for T60 fan in this German forum. If I remember correctly, a member named Seja is selling a T60p fan after doing a Frankenpad mod from T60p to T61p.
Compaq 386SX > AST 486SX-25 > TP 390E > Compaq N410C > T41 2373-9U5 > T42p 2378-RVU UXGA 1.7@2.45GHz > T60p UXGA modded to T61 8889-ACG with T8300 OCed to 3.2Ghz@1.20V, undervolted to 1.6Ghz@0.775v, Nvidia NVS-140M undervolted to 0.9v, PCI-E ASPM enabled, 11W power in idle.
