Fan for T60 2007-CTO V3B

Hello

Finally back from the US to a new job in Norway, I realize that my T60's fan is getting noisier every day and it needs some attention very soon. The problem is that my machine 2007- CTO V3B isn't listed in the Lenovo parts manual. And there are two different discrete "thermal device and fan" units for the T60 to choose from. 41V9932 and 41W6407. Does anybody know what is the difference between these two? Can both be used, or what can be the determining factor here?

So long the T510 from work is a nice stand in, but I have to say I am looking forward to have the T60 back in business. Any way to make the T510 internals work in a T60 4:3 chassis?

First of all: Beware that your fan need not necessarily be replaced if beginning to become noisy; the noise may in whole or part be owing to an excessive amount of dust sitting in the fan. Some users have reported managing to take apart a fan, greasing it (using e.g. sewing machine oil which is free of damaging acid), and all is OK again; about how to do this, see the guide at ThinkPad T60 Fan Repair. That would be the cheapest fix!

While I don’t understand what you exactly mean by ”2007-CTO V3B” you should be able to look up most of the parts originally shipped with your ThinkPad through the Warranty Status and at the following page (“Warranty status”) where you select “View parts lookup results for this system” to get a comprehensive list. Some parts may however not be displayed there. What is the GPU in your T60? The cooling fan is different for the different GPU’s (integrated Intel GMA950 or the ATI X1300/X1400/FireGL V5200) as evident from System service parts - ThinkPad T60, T60p (4:3 LCD systems).

As you have probably figured out already, 41W6407 is an newer and improved version of 41V9932. Where 41V9932 is marginal is some cases, 41W6407 does the job correctly.

Before you install the new assembly, make sure that you peel the thin plastic covers off of the two grey heat sink pads. The manual doesn't mention that step.

and the thread T60: Planning on swapping out my T2400 for a T7600...help? which gives a number of good advices:

1.) Don't touch the thermal pads. As long as they are not torn and they touch the GPU once installed you are good to go.
2.) Doesn't matter as long as you apply a paper thin even coat. I usually apply it to the CPU core.
3.) Use the paste in the amount equal to the size of a grain of rice. Use a credit card to smooth it out and cover the entire core. Remember - paper thin.

Spareparts for T60 ThinkPad’s can be purchased e.g. directly from IBM see IBM Reservedeler. Beware of shipping time and –cost.

PS: If you are about to "upgrade" your old, trustworthy T60 with a new fan, then I'd absolute suggest that you get yourself an Intel X25-M Solid State Drive while you're spending money already. You certain won't reget that upgrade - I assure you! Although Intel is coming out with their third generation laptop SSD's most likely in March 2011 (designated "Postville Refresh"), it is uncertain if the 2nd generation SSD's will fall in price, but if you wish - keep an eye open for that!

Do you have integrated graphics from intel and a low temperature cpu like the T2400? I have this configuration and just disabled the fan. Works nice for over one and a half year

Thank you very much, the link to the 41V9932 vs. 41W6407 and the picture of the two compared is exactly what I was looking for. I apparently used the wrong search terms, so I didn't find it and gave up searching. BTW, I have the 2400 CPU and X1400 graphics.

Apart from that I have opened up the T60 a couple of times before and also changed fans in my older Thinkpads, so I should be fine. When it comes to the advice of lubricating the old fan, I have in fact repaired a couple of fans in older T30s by using oil (Actually a drop of thick gear oil) And these fans still work today. But the T60 is the main laptop, so here is a brand new fan that I can trust the only option. The fewer times I have to open up the laptop the better.

A SSD is definitely on the list for this year. Win7, maximum RAM and a SSD are the upgrades I have planned for the T60 this year.

I made the order based on the recommendations above, so the fan and a couple of other small parts arrived in the mail today. Nice in a box with IBM tape and an invoice with the IBM logo. Apparently IBM is still in the picture in certain parts of the world.
