T60p & DVI via mini dock-- basic question

I'm thinking of getting an external monitor to attach to my T60p via DVI with the advanced mini dock, but I have a basic question about the actual DVI signal: is attaching a monitor via the mini dock effectively the same thing as actually having a video card with a native DVI interface, or is the dock actually converting the signal in a way that is inferior to native DVI support? I realize that the dock also accepts graphics cards, although I'd rather not have to purchase another card in addition to the dock...

in short, I pretty much just want to attach a DVI monitor and achieve the best picture possible; I have no real need for the extra ports on the dock, but it seems this is the best way to get DVI quality, correct?

thanks for any guidance here.

Yes, the dock's DVI is native digital video output, coming straight from the laptop's video adapter.
