We've discussed this issue before here on the forum - a while ago why you (HarryC) may perhaps not remember it - but the answer does not seem to a definitive, simple "no", as evident from the thread
15" Flexview UXGA screen for sale and more precisely with reference to
this post. More about T60 EDID's in the thread
T6x EDID database.
You (Riktar) are not saying whether it is a SXGA+ (1400x1050) or an UXGA (1600x1200) LCD you're asking about/considering to swap (on your maybe-to-come-T60), but since you are making reference to a R51, and not a R51p, I guess we are talking about a SXGA+ panel. In such case, try check the cost for a new, original, native 15" SXGA+ LCD for a T60; see
15 inch LCD service parts - ThinkPad T60/p (with 4:3 LCD's) where you will see that SXGA+ LCD's are FRU 13N7078/42T0324/42T0325 (LG-Philips) or 13N7196 (Boe-Hydis) while the UXGA panels are 13N7075/13N7076 (Boe-Hydis) or 13N7194 (Boe-Hydis, AFFS or sRGB). Notice the inverters for XGA, SXGA+ and UXGA T60's. By the way, you might (also!) benefit from browsing the sticky here in the T6x conference:
LCDs on T60/T60p - types, availability and other discussions. From that thread you'll learn that the manufacturer "IDTech" made a batch of 15" UXGA panels for T60p's; those had FRU = 42T0345. Also, e.g. have a look in the thread
Upgraded 15" T60 to UXGA... nice!... after doing that, you might wanna take the UXGA route!
Try have a look on eBay for brand new, original Lenovo LCD's with those numbers... I've been lucky to pick up 15" SXGA+ T60 LCD's very cheap on eBay (I aint gonna say for how little, you won't believe it!). Hang around for a while, but avoid LCD labeled "
compatible with" etc. and also be careful with "manufacturer refurbished" (what does this actually mean?) etc. Only go for
original Lenovo LCD's.
About how difficult it is to swap the LCD on a T60? Well, judge for yourself - by viewing
IBM ThinkPad T60 LCD screen replacement guide (step-by-step instructions to change display panel).
If the question however was: "
Has anyone actually done this?", then I'd say; not as far as I know - but again, that doesn't necessarily mean "no". In case you consider this, I'd suggest to Google a bit (more), not the least in the depositories of this forum; you may benefit from HarryC's script
here.
Keep up posted if you go ahead with this!
