T61 - serial help

#1 Post by peralex1 » Sun Feb 20, 2011 10:36 pm

Hi, I built T61 7663-P5V from "for parts" laptop and everything seems to be working fine but update keeps sending me an Error 95. Since I built it out of parts is there anyway to get a serial number for the system? System ID shows 7663-P5V as a beginning followed by serial that is not recognised by lenovo website (warranty look-up). Hardware and software corresponds to 7663-P5V as well. Reading system info it only gives system ID and Mobo ID. System update recommends to contact tech support. Is it a viable option? Any other suggestions? Thanks.

Tech support will do nothing for you.

In my book, what you're facing is not a big deal at all. Update the stuff manually when needed and enjoy the machine if you're otherwise happy with it.

Good luck.

I guess - you are right - it works fine, why bother? I know, I know. I think it will bother me for ages to have somewhat incomplete project. Does it make sence? Probably not, but such is my nature. Thanks anyway.

George is right -- you can do your own updates -- otherwise you are right back where you started: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=29&t=90175

I know, I never could finish than. OK. I still want to finish it. The only thing I am trying to figure out is why it throws me err 95 on update - is it because my serial is not right or Model/type is not exactly right? I know that doing nothing is a route of least resistance and that is why i refuse to give up and will do it over and over again until its perfect. If you can not help - why bother writing? Just ignore the post.

Your serial might have been "purged" from the system. There are many, many ThinkPads out there, completely legit and legal, that can't be found in the database for a variety of reasons.

The only way to resolve the issue at hand - after reading your other thread - would be to input the serial number from the old planar into the new one. And my understanding is that you don't have the ability to do that, at least not at the moment...so you might want to finish it, but are missing the needed resources.

Be thankful that you're not facing a pre-production machine with a test BIOS...

Are you saying that I can combine new planar type like 7663-P5V in my case with the old serial number? So what is update looking for - model/type or combination of model/type with serial? Thanks

If you move the serial, you must also move the model number, it's the whole sequence that must match and make sense in the system, like

Good luck.

If you have error 95, uninstall system update and reinstall. (search lenovo site for "system update 3.14")
