Where to use a WUXGA screen?

#1 Post by Tasurinchi » Sat Mar 19, 2011 4:13 pm

Hi everybody

I'm eyeing a WUXGA screen that is being offered quite cheap (so far). The auction is about a complete 15.4 screen in working condition, pulled out from a T61p including lid, wireless antennas, bluetooth, inverter and so on... If there are not many bids I could get this for a good price and have a project to work on.

The question is, where can this screen be used? Apart from the original T61p of course and apart from any Nvidia model... Will it fit in a 15.4 Z61m/p? Will it work at all with an Intel or ATI GPU?

Thanks a lot in advance!

Regards

It will work on any 15.4" widescreen ThinkPad...T60/61, Z61/p, W500, T500...will work with any GPU as well...

Having said that, if it's a Samsung screen you'll likely regret ever installing it anywhere...they are horrendous in my not-so-modest opinion. I've had them in both T61p and W500 and couldn't badmouth them enough at the time...LG ones are mostly tolerable, with the early examples (mostly seen in Z61p) being nicer in my opinion.

Good luck.

Thanks for the hint George. The seller did not state which model it is. I'll probably have to ask the model number of the T61p where it was pulled off...

You also need the Serial # to find out the original LCD P/N.
If you only get e.g. 8897-CTO, you'd still be up the proverbial creek.

Thanks RBS for the hint!

Were the Samsungs LCDs popular in T61p's? I thought that being them high end models they would rather use high end LCDs too... :|

Finally I've pulled the trigger on this one! The seller didn't know the panel's manufacturer, but screens like this are really rare around here so I decided to get it. Now I have to start looking for a cheap 15.4 T6/R6/Z6 to put the screen on it.

In case it is a Samsung lcd... How bad is it? Is it bad because it's dark? How would you rate it against the screens of any of the TPs I already have? (See my sig, all of them have the "standard" screens, no mods done)

@Edit: One more question, to test if the screen is working I was thinking in a quick approach using my 4:3 T60. Disassembling the palmrest, keyboard, keyboard bezel, detaching the LCD ribbon cable and attaching the new cable. Hopefully the WUXGA screen will work and then I can reattach the original cable and build everything again. Anything else I should consider? Hopefully I'm not being to naive with this procedure... :?

Samsung are generally not that dim, but have horrible viewing angles and poor colour reproduction...

You can test it in your Z61m, it should be plug and play...

Thanks George for the info! I don't care that much about viewing angles, but a poor color reproduction would bother me...

Short status. I tested the screen and according to my Ubuntu 10.10 stick it turned to be a Phillips LCD which for me looked great! Brilliant and sharp :thumbs-UP:

Now I'm looking for the "lower half" of a T61 or T60p to install the complete thing, just posted a LF thread in our Marketplace.

Was feeling like bringing back to life my own old thread. I got a nice T61 (Intel) from Ron and I could finally swap the screen with my WUXGA!

For those thinking on doing a similar upgrade, I have to say that this is a great screen and I'm more than happy with the results! This resolution rules!!! :thumbs-UP: Now I have trouble going back to my old 22" screen with 1680x1050, everything looks so big and unsharp! And I can have so many windows open... 8)

Now ist just a matter of time to get a nice SSD and hope to get a big HD in the ultrabay once prices go back to normality...

I'm in love again...

1920x1200 is truly the best laptop resolution ever, better than 2048x1536 (whose DPI is too high). There are some excellent 15.4" WUXGA panels and I wonder if yours is one of those. Just two weeks ago I saw a Dell Latitude E6500 with a WUXGA screen that had amazingly wide viewing angles, almost as wide as IPS panels!

Sadly, the highest we can now get for laptops is 1920x1080. For several days I tried using my Latitude D820 at 1920x1080 just to see what that felt like, and the difference with WUXGA was remarkable.

Fully agree with you here. First I thought the 1680x1050 pixels of my wife's Z61m was the best. But now I almost can't stay away long from this one

Really sad indeed, I was checking some Dells D820/830 with WUXGA panels and was also thinking in buying some of them just for the sake of keeping a store of WUXGA notebooks, since I have the impression we will get "stuck" with only FullHD in middle term future :(

The D830 suffered the same Nvidia defect that the T61/61p had. The D820 fared better although some units were also affected. It would be safer to get an E6500, though I must admit the D820/830 had a prettier design. When I work on my D820, I am usually not very productive because I keep admiring how nice it looks!

It's tough to fault an Intel-based T61 WUXGA FrankenPad as long as the screen is decent, which a LG one should be...so kudos to you, Tasurinchi... :thumbs-UP:

Speaking of WUXGA, isn't there a MacBook that still carries that resolution?

Thank you! I have no experiences with other WUXGA panels, but it's about as bright as my X41T, which is I think one of the brightest I have in my Thinkpad collection.
