I was curious if anyone had any suggestions / links on how to get this done?

I was reading through some links and they mention that its more difficult since the LCD cannot have the EDID data polled?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Suggest you start by reviewing the in-depth thread The Complete 6x-series QXGA Thread and then ask questions in that thread in stead of starting a new on the same issue (?!).

Also, kindly allow me to point your attention to this very useful search-script made by HarryC - try it out, and you'll learn how to find answers to many questions... already answered in great detail!

Before you attempt this mod, let me warn you that it has three downsides:

1) This QXGA panel is quite dim.

2) It's significantly heavier than the UXGA or SXGA+ panel.

3) Quite a few people who have seen it find the pixel density way too high. In general, increasing resolution enhances one's productivity, but only up to a point. For me, the 171DPI density of my T43p's QXGA was counter-productive. Selling it was one of the best decisions I have ever made.

Duly noted, Im currently running 1600x1200 on a gentoo install and want more space. I guess if the resolution is too high i could always bump back down.

The inherent problem ive seen in the new laptops are how they force you to buy a widescreen laptop with less screen real estate.

Anyways thanks for the help.

I know how that feels, which was why I tried the QXGA mod but eventually came to the conclusion that 15.4" 1920x1200 struck the best balance among viewing comfort, real estate and portability. 17.0" 1920x1200 is even more comfortable to view but too bulky to lug around often.

I'm with pianowizard here...

Although my "main" machines have been UXGA ThinkPads for the past decade, I found QXGA a little difficult to swallow when used exclusively on daily basis, first with a heavily-modded R50p a couple of years ago and then with PW's own QXGA T43p...

WUXGA is likely the most interesting resolution available on 16:10 format, closely followed by WXGA+. That being said, I'd love to see a really good laptop LCD with it - something that I believe costs south of four grand and is being sold with HP label...which is not a purchase I can justify at the moment...

and to follow-up on ajkula66 here...
i must say i like really like my qxga t43p, which started with pw, followed by aj. 8)

i don't use it all of the time, but it's by no means a museum piece either. i like it's history, also.

I've in fact just moved back from the UXGA to SXGA+ and find it much more comfortable being able to lean back a bit and not have to squint at the screen to read the text. Even though the UXGA panel (Hydis) is much better and brighter :(

But I could very well understand the benefit of a QXGA panel for anyone who does heavy graphics work (photo retouching, viewing maps, etc.) because of the immense amount of detail available without the need to zoom in -- or for anyone running multiple virtual machines or VNC connections and wanting to fit them onto one display. And I'm sure this list of applications is not exhaustive :)
