T60 2007-5BU Fan Error - IBM Atlanta says $375-575 to fix?

#1 Post by carl3 » Thu Mar 31, 2011 12:57 pm

Got two beeps and fan error on screen. Eventually came up and is running. Haven't heard fan, so not sure if it is still working. I am a light user, so never did run hot.

I am in Atlanta area, and have no idea of who can be trusted to work on it. Called IBM Atlanta repair and got estimate of $375-575 to fix it. Makes it not worthwhile at that price. Any recommendations on somewhere else to go in Atlanta area and what to expect to pay.

Here is what I have:
T60
2007-5BU
T2400 chip
3GB memory
60GB 7200rpm drive
160GB 5400 drive ultra bay
CD-RW ultra bay
wifi, nic, modem
XP Pro SP3
finger print reader
6 and 9 cell batteries (6 cell 2 cycles, 9 cell 11 cycles)
15" SVGA+ flexview 1050x1400

Thanks for any input.

With the help of the HMM you can do that yourself.
The part costs around $60.- and you should be able to do the swap within one hour.

here's the link to the hmm:

see if you feel comfortable doing the task yourself. it's pretty straightforward. also a good time to refresh the thermal paste and sweep out any dust-bunnies.

very doable, and a good opportunity to poke around the inside of the machine for a bit of maintenance.

You can get fan/heatsink assys for almost nothing, used off eBay.
