How to get 802.11n in LENOVO T61 ?

#1 Post by 029kid » Fri Apr 08, 2011 5:16 am

Hi all.

This is my first post :)

I own a Lenovo T61 (765912G) laptop which has a Intel 4965 n-disabled WIFI card.
My question is, is this card different from other Intel 4965 card where 802.11n is ON?
In other words, can I only hack the Bios to get it to work ?
Or do I need a new Intel 4965 card where 802.11n is not disabled ? Or other models.

I got a Intel 5100 but this card has only two antenna connectors and I see three cables in my computer, can I get it to work ? I wasn’t sure what do to when I opened the computer last night.

Please let me know.

Thanks

The 5100 will do you no good unless you hack the bios. Otherwise, its more feasible to get a 4965AGN card from Ebay; you need to get those with Lenovo FRU, such as 42T0865.
ThinkPad X220 IPS / Windows 7 PRO 64bit / i7-2620M / 8GB Samsung PC3-10600 / (WLAN) Intel 6205 Advanced-N / (WWAN) Sony Ericsson F5521GW / OCZ Vertex 3 120GB (Main) + OCZ Vertex 2 200GB (Ultrabay)

Ok, but can i get the 5100 to work with just two antennas ?
Ill look at the 42T0865, but I will need to hack the BIOS with this as well, right ?

Welcome to the forum.
That card will work fine with 2 antenna wires, but you need to modify/upgrade your BIOS.
You could also use the 6200 (2 wires) or 6300 (3 wires).
Check that your 3rd wire is for wifi-N and not for BlueTooth!

See my postings here: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.ph ... 20#p624820 (scroll up).
Get that Middleton BIOS, it is superb.

How would I know if the 3rd wire is for N or bluetooth?

The card says:
TR1
RO
TR2

EDIT:

IF i get the 42T0865, will I have to hack the BIOS?

You do NOT have to hack the bios - the 42T0865 will work just fine with a standard T61. Your T61 probably already has the third antenna wire lying around disconnected to anything. So just connect that third wire to the middle pin on the 42T0865 and away you go. Make sure that the Intel 4965 is a genuine ThinkPad card - the FRU will be printed on the front.

The 802.11n support is permanently disabled in the hardware in the 4965AG card.

Yes.

If you are prepared to go with a non-Lenovo supplied BIOS, it will probably work.
