T61 XP Pro x64 Audio Driver problem

I have tried installing three different versions of soundmax audio drivers, two versions of realtek. The UAA HD audio driver patch/fix thing, the Q888111 osfix thing, along with every other useless stupid worthless piece of crap each website has told me to install. Installing .net framework, directx, and whatever other not working patch/fixes they came up with.
IBM Thinkpad T61 running XP Pro x64. I am about to tear my hair out from the scalp up. No matter what I do I cannot get any audio working. I had to manually install my drivers when I formatted, so if there are certain unrelated ones I need for the audio to work please let me know. As well as any other piece of advice you've got.
I've been at this for like 15 hours now. Please somebody have an answer as to why nothing works.

Uninstall everything you've tried. Download and install ThinkVantage System Update. Run it. Let the board know what happens.
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... 66956.html is for XP.

It claims it can't find the supported .net framework! And will not install.
LKDSGLKFSAHGLKFSNGFKJG
In add/remove programs it says I have .net framework 4 client profile and extended. When I searched for .net framework for xp 64bit that's what it told me to download.

Windows Update? I believe System Update is looking for .Net Framework 3.51.

It seems that Microsoft did not implement compatability for certain .NET packages, so even though it will tell you, "a newer version is available" you still need 3.51.
Believe me, I have been in the same hair-tearing situation many times, but once you get system update going you should be fine.

XP Pro 64 is not a supported platform for ThinkPads, so it not surprising that you are having difficulties.
If you want a straightforward solution, install Win 7 x64.

Even where it is 'supported' like my Precision M4400 it is less than optimal. I currently dual-boot between XP x64 and 7 x64 and I'll be replacing the XP with 32-bit very shortly. XP 64-bit is just not a well-supported OS compared to the alternatives.

I'm quickly noticing that. But I hate installing OSes, I hate it more than setting up networks. I was under the impression if you had a 64bit processor you HAD to run a 64bit OS. That's why I got it, I don't like Vista or 7. I just want to be able to have sound.

Just realised you're running xp64. I had a toshiba laptop that came with 7 64 bit, but it was having all kinds of issues with wireless, so I switched to xp64. I found that by using the device manager to retrieve the hardware ids and looking them up you can find drivers much easier. This helps with things listed as unknown or other device, and most of the time a link is provided. The site is called pci database. Here it is:

Well, I uninstalled .net framework 4, install 3.5.1, got system update successfully installed. THEN the [censored] claimed it was old and needed an update, preceded to
attempt to update itself. Fail. Then decided not to work at all. I recall a nifty website entitled
oldversion.com not everybody likes the newest versions of things. :/
As for the searching for drivers myself with the device manager. I probably should've prefaced that I'm quite bad with hardware, I really only have experience with software. That and when I bought 7 and XP, I realized my XP was 32bit so I ended up settling on TinyXP x64. Which with my [censored] luck is probably the source of most of my issues. Because I can't find the vender id, or any type of id in the properties in the device manager.
I'm going to end up with an audio-less laptop and have to buy myself a boombox.

Nobody said anything about uninstalling .net 4. Let's try again. Windows Update. Grab what it offers and reinstall. Then Windows Update again. Keep running Windows Update until it doesn't offer you any other updates. Then re-install ThinkVantage System Update (TVSU) and run that until it finds nothing else to install. Let us know, and try to keep the language civil. We all know how to curse. This is not the place for it.

Sigh. I installed windows update. I reinstalled thinkvantage. Now it just gives me an error about not being able to gather my user information. I tried to check another forum about that, and have yet to get around that error. I'm sure something ridiculously small is out of line somewhere 'causing all this. But as someone that formally had an anger management problem. I think slipping a swear word or two is a relatively good reaction to all the problems I've had simply downgrading an OS.
I wish I had googled whether you could run 32bit XP on a 64bit processor beforehand. For some odd reason I didn't think that was possible, so I just went and installed 64bit. It's a highly customized install, very lightweight, it's under 2gbs. So far all I know I'm missing a single .dll file or something. But, since nobody has been able to figure it out how to help me. I'm beginning to think I ought to just give up. I've tried all these things, nothing works. I could format and reinstall yet again, but I don't know what good it's going to do. I believe with the original windows 7 install the audio worked, but who knows maybe it didn't and I just bought a broken laptop.

Did you ever install the Intel Chipset drivers?
In the last group on this page:

Yep. I just spent the last few hours tracking down more information and trying to install missing drivers and different versions. Reinstalled .net framework like three times now. Downloaded and installed DirectX 9, attempted to install UAA hotfix like nine times, windows update claimed it did, but I don't see it.
And all of them claim the system is too new to need it when I try to install them. ThinkVantage update refuses to even attempt to update because it claims there was an error gathering user information. I apparently installed something in Russian by accident and at this point don't give a flying fig.
And anyone who thinks I'm just not doing my part in this is sorely mistaken. Spending endless hours searching there forums, signing up, asking questions, and then getting ignored when all you'd like is for your audio to work properly isn't fun.
So I apologize for my witchiness. Any further help would be greatly appreciated, as now I can't even watch educational videos without sound.

That really doesn't seem to be going in your way at all. If it was me, I would have reinstalled long ago, maybe with a different OS. if you have backups taken I would just do that, it will save you immense amounts of time and stress.

Did the sound work before?
Or did you just recently get this machine and try to install for the first time?
Maybe the speakers are faulty.
Maybe the settings are 'muted' in the 'Sounds & AUdio Devices' program in Control Panel.
Have you tried running a Linux Live-CD to see if audio is working there?

I reinstalled a few times. I haven't tried 32bit XP, because as I stated before I did in fact do something ridiculously dumb and not check if it was compatible lol. The sound isn't muted. I haven't tried a live Linux-CD, I don't remember how to do that. :/ And the guy I just bought this from said when I asked if the buttons on here worked. He said he used the volume ones all the time, they just didn't display anything on the screen. So I suppose if you get technical I did not witness the sound myself per se.

Well. After doing even more in depth research. I've seen several people have problems with Windows XP x64 and HD audio. Seems to me that the two just don't seem to work together at all. However. If I format, reinstall XP 32bit and still cannot get the audio working... Well I'm just gonna have to consider myself cursed.

With 32-bit XP you should rather feel blessed!

Indeed. Three re-installs and three shots later, I have audio.
Side note: XP x64 and the Tango patcher can kiss my patootie.

Audio works fine for me using XP x64 on the T61.
So just get the Vista x64 audio driver:
http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc ... a213ww.exe
Run the executable, then go to device manager and update driver by pointing to the folder where the .exe installed the audio software:
C:\DRIVERS\Vista\Audio\AMD64
I got XP X64 for free and with a SSD and 8GB of ram on a T61 it is wicked fast and stable.

You don't mind the absence of trim? Of course it depends on the drive, some SSDs suffer more than others without a TRIM command supported operating system. I do agree though, wicked fast.

Sorry for bumping old threat
I have an alternative for T61's audio driver, go to this link :
http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/109404- ... 26110-dts/
and download
SoundMAX Audio Driver v5.10.01.6110 DTS for Windows 2000/XP(WHQL)/2003 / v5.10.02.6110 DTS for Windows 64bit XP (WHQL)/64bit 2003 released 2007/12/04 or
SoundMAX Audio Driver v5.10.02.6240 for Windows XP 64bit(WHQL) released 2007/07/09
save the zip file on your hard drive (on my case I saved it on drive F: )
Go to Device Manager, if already installed using Vista's driver, removed them first
Instal the new driver manually by selecting the INF file
On my T61, it would be :
F:\driver t61\LENOVO THINKPAD T61\AD1988DTS\64bit\XP\SMAXWDM\W2K_XP\ADIHdAud.inf
after that, let the OS update the driver and you will have the correct sound driver without having smax4pnp error each time thw OS boot
worked for me like a charm (after 3 times re-installing WinXP SP2 x64 on my SSD )
---
the problem I have now, is the error message on TVSU, not working hotkey Fn+F3, Fn+F5, Fn+F7 and the LCD brightness controller is not working too ...
but I can live and work with current state

You're missing the Hotkey drivers.

I did installed the Hotkey driver, it has 5 packages right?
The volume buttons are working, the mute button is also working
The display brightness is working, too (but no changing in brightness )
What's left is the Power Manager's Fn+F3, Access Connection's Fn+F5, Presentation display's Fn+F7
owh, and "Error getting user information" from TVSU
