T60 does not turn on

#1 Post by fredyu » Sun May 08, 2011 11:10 am

I have a 4-year-old t60 15.4 widescreen (8743TZU) model. It doesn't turn on and not even the Thinkpad startup screen shows up. The last time it worked was ended because the screen froze.

What happened after I hit power button:
1. all status lights are on (for less than a second, just like when you just turn on the computer)
2. only power and hdd lights are on; fan on; dvd drive spins up
3. cpu fan off; dvd drive keeps spinning
4. dvd drive stops spinning
5. at the end, only power and hdd lights are on and no observable sound can be heard
6. nothing can be seen on screen during the entire process

I tried the power button trick and it didn't work. I used ubuntu cd to boot it up and nothing showed. Can anyone share his/her experience to fix this? Thank you very much!

Remove all RAM. Does the machine beep? (You can power up the machine with the palm rest removed)

Check the AC adapter. Do you have a multimeter? You should be able to measure 20vDC at the end of the tip, + or - 5%. To quote 'Ray' -
The "center pin" does not deliver any voltage; it's the metal wall inside the plug that has the +20V with respect to the metal shell on the outside of the plug. See this: http://www.kawakami-ca.com/images/20v_dc_plug.jpg
If the voltage is OK, you need a new systemboard...or the CPU is loose or defective.

The cheapest way to check if the CPU is the culprit, would be to borrow or buy an Intel T1300 (Core Solo) CPU, less than $15.- on eBay.
Before you do, remove HD, CD, wifi/bluetooth/wwan/modem cards, as well as the RAM.
Try again if it now beeps (1-3-3-1 beeps).
If still no joy, try the T1300.
If that doesn't work, look for a replacement mobo.

Thank you for your help, Harryc and RealBlackStuff!

I am going to borrow a cpu from my friend and test it out.

Just quick question.
Will a t1300 fit the t5500 socket?
