The real benefit of 64 bit is you can use more than 3GB of memory if you need it, but most don't need it in my experience.

I currently have 4gb RAM on my T61, running Windows 2003 server to make use of the 4GB ram. I run a lot of VMs.
do I need 64bit to make use of the 4gb RAM and how will I know if my CPU will support it?
thanks.

If you have 4gbs ram, you need the 64 bit version. Any T61/R61/X61 will run x64 software, as will any other system with a Core2Duo (Not Core Duo)
