Hi folks.
Yesterday I was in the kitchen and I heard four or five fast (about a half-second between I'd say) and quite loud beeps coming from the area of my desk. It's littered with electronics, some powered up, and I had no idea what might have made the sound. I checked the T60 that was running and, as far as I could ascertain, nothing was running outside of normal parameters. Puzzled but not unduly worried I went back to cooking my dinner.
About two hours later I was sitting at my T60 and the same series of beeps occurred and they seemed to come from the left side of the palmrest. (I wish I'd counted the beeps to be sure of the number but I must admit to having been in a bit of a panic. My FlexView T60s are very precious to me.)
Again I checked all parameters that I could. I have Notebook Hardware Control running with the ACPI function going so can see many temps from all over the machine and none seemed 'wrong'. I fired up Everest Ultimate and looked at the 'Sensors' screen and also checked the HDD status with Hard Disk Sentinel. Nothing was out of the ordinary that I could see.
I did the low-tech-check too, feeling all around the machine for hot-spots or anything untoward. I listened closely to the whole machine and, again, nothing seemed out of the ordinary. The sound seemed to have come from the area where the (empty) PC card slots are but that might be because that hollow part of the machine acted like an echo chamber or funnel of sorts.
The machine is pretty standard I guess. It's the first one in my sig and has been upgraded to 3GB of RAM and a 320GB 7.2K HDD. It sits in a port replicator attached to a Lenovo notebook stand at the highest setting so the screen is eye-level. Other than that, as far as I can think, everything is stock-standard. The CPU is undervolted but many an hour has been spent with Prime95 ensuring that it's rock-solid stable with the voltages it's running at. Also it never gives me the dreaded BSOD and is, in general, an extremely well-behaved machine.
Other than hearing that series of beeps twice there's nothing to suggest that anything's wrong with the machine. It's working just as well as it always does <touches wood>.... However I don't like mysteries. Especially when they involve my beloved FlexView-equipped T60.
Can anybody enlighten me? I'm not sure if I should be worried and that worries me!
Help please? TYVMIA.....

Check the hard drive's SMART parameters with a utility from it's manufacturer to make sure SMART is not trying to warn you about an impending Disk failure.

Re: Beeps coming from running T60?
Thanks Harry, I keep a close watch on all HDD parameters with Hard Disk Sentinel (I can't recommend it enough) and everything is fine.Harryc wrote:Check the hard drive's SMART parameters with a utility from it's manufacturer to make sure SMART is not trying to warn you about an impending Disk failure.
I actually PM'ed Bill (as I didn't know what else to do) in a vain attempt to cancel this post. (A 'contact the moderators' link would be great!) Just after I posted this but before it was proof-read and okayed the T43 at my left elbow gave out three loud and fast beeps that I recognised. (I told you I was confused as to how many beeps.) The frequency is just at the pitch where locating the direction isn't easy. However this time I wasn't sitting straight at my desk, rather leaning to the left, over the T43 and it was obvious where they originated.
So, <whew>, my T60 is fine! However I don't know why this particular T43 would beep like that when it's just sitting there, the adapter is plugged in but the laptop isn't running. I guess that I need to track that one down now. However, having this post in the wrong group doesn't help.
Thanks for your answer, sorry to lead you on a wild-goose chase.
Shaun.
