T60 15" SXGA+ IPS LG-Phillips CCFL Replacement

Hi all,

I have a T60 with the 15" SXGA+ LG-Phillips IPS which has become quite yellow and dim. In terms of replacing the standard CCFL tube, has anyone successfully attempted this (and what replacement lamp specs and if possible, lamp supplier was used)?

There appears to be a few IDTech lamp replacements (possibly due to the T4x / R5x age) which I have come across the search but I cannot seem to find much for the LG-Phillips?

It would be great to bring this IPS LCD back to life as it is in good condition.

If you have any tips / guides / images that would be very helpful.

It's most likely the polarizer getting yellow and not a back-light issue, although that could also be dimming. Moniserv has back-lights.

Thanks Harryc for the link,

I think its the common problem that has occurred to these T60 15" SXGA+ LG IPS screens with the low quality back light installed from production.

I am wondering has anyone attempted this as a DIY project for this specific IPS LCD themselves?

From the previous discussions with the IDTech displays, it seems that the fiddly components and the risk of dust being trapped inside the display is what makes this project quite difficult.

I fix lots of things (more than almost anyone), and I quit doing bulbs because the results were never good, even after many attempts. I also have very good soldering equipment. I have always ended up with little spots. (dust) I also have found that the replacement bulbs are a little shorter (maybe 1mm), and I always end up with shadows in the lower corners.

I think I still have a 15" IPS screen around here. My notes say it is new, but I'm not sure. It is in a box somewhere. I can check to see what it is if you wish. I'm not sure if it is SXGA or UXGA. I probably also have bulbs that are left over from when I used to do them.

I've done many IDTechs (UXGA), they are quite easy.
Haven't had an LG Philips yet.
Only last Friday I did a successful CCFL replacement on a 15" BoeHydis UXGA LCD.
They have their CCFL in a separate reflector unit, which is complicated to get off.
These are almost as bad/hard to do as the 14" Hitachi LCDs, which I hate with a passion!
But if you do it correctly and take your time, there's no need for dust to get in between layers. When you take the metal surround partly off, make sure to hold the layers together and use some scotch-tape to hold those layers together while you work on the CCFL.
I will not do another BoeHydis, I swear!

Thanks for the input, given that it seems like the CCFL replacement can be a rather tricky project I guess I might look out for a replacement LCD or alternatively get an expert to replace the CCFL globe on the existing LCD at a later stage.

It's too bad that these LG IPS SXGA+ LCDs' were flawed by the low grade CCFL as they are quite good in color reproduction for a notebook IPS / Flexview LCD.

Cheers.
