T61 14.1 mobo with Resolution is 2048×1536 with an IPS

#1 Post by bgalakazam » Sun May 22, 2011 11:55 pm

I saw this on a blog post as reply, but guy didn't have contact e-mail. Can you clarify which IPS screen he is talking about?
I’m typing this on a 4:3 “T60″ (aka the T62p++)

Resolution is 2048×1536 with an IPS screen (retro modded in) on this bad boy. I’ve recently also
replaced the original motherboard with a T61p motherboard
Reason is I am planning to get a T61/T61p with Penryn and do other upgrades, but was wondering about what he is talking about.

Cheers.

The panel is an IDTech IAQX10S or IAQX10N. It was only offered in the R50p, but has been successfully implanted into a number of other 15" ThinkPads. See here as an example. What they probably did is take the motherboard from a 4:3 T61p and transplant it into a T60 case, which is completely doable, along with the QXGA screen. The QXGA is a flexview panel running at 2048x1536 resolution. Color and viewing angles are very good, but the display is rated at 150 nits, which is dimmer than other newer flexview Thinkpads. At 170 PPI, the pixel density is quite high, so careful what you wish for.

Yeah I don't plan to do it, but thanks for the info. Sounds like too much work for something I don't really need. All I care is 4:3 aspect. :)

Looks awesome!!! I would've gone a tad further. I would've opted for the nVidia Quadro 570M revision 2 or .5 board that has the GPU issues cleared up and finally I would change the LCD bezel sticker to the T61p one, and finally add the Windows 7 sticker as well as the appropriate Intel Sticker on the lower left side of the palmrest. :)

Mine is almost done, just need 8GB RAM and maybe an Intel SSD :)

Too bad I can't put in an IPS LCD into my 14.1" 4:3 model... unless anyone knows that I can??

@ tpclover:

Welcome to the forum! With respect to where to get a T60/p QXGA panel, I'd suggest you read The Complete 6x-series QXGA Thread where you will - probably/hopefully! - find all the necessary information. Maybe a bit of additional Google'ing is needed, but I am confident that the QGXA-thread will give all the leads you need.

I have been looking for over a week. The cheapest I found was $350 shipped. I only found 2 other sellers that do single orders. Seems that no one does single orders and the ones that do want skyrocketed prices.

Thinkpad parts has listed $250, but they haven't replied to me yet.

Just my own personal opinion here, but you're probably better off going with the UXGA Hydis LCD. The pixel density on the QXGA is 170. It's quite high and I think too high for most users while the 133 PPI on the UXGA LCD is very usable. There have been a few people here who sold QXGA Thinkpads because they were difficult to use. Plus the UXGA screen significantly brighter, especially compared to today's screens. The UXGA is available from a quality seller here on ebay. Several people here have bought from them, but good luck either way.

Just to give you an idea...here are a few (lou$y) shots that I took some time ago, for screen comparison purposes, all the machines in the picture are T43/p units with 15" IPS FlexView screens...

All the way in the back, SXGA+ (LG Phillips) UXGA (ID Tech) in the middle, and QXGA (ID Tech) all the way up front

http://ajkula66.shutterfly.com

The second one is QXGA in the front > UXGA > SXGA+

And in the last picture it's QXGA>SXGA+>UXGA

I've been using UXGA ThinkPads as my main machines for almost a decade now, and have decided on two occasions that QXGA - as lovely as it may be - is way too much for me for daily use. YMMV.

tpclover, I purchased one of the panels in the eBay listing that Fred linked to, and I can say the screens are everything he claims. The Hydis UXGA is the way to go.

Just because you can't handle the QXGA doesn't mean you have to thread hijack

You don't need to praise the UXGA in a QXGA thread.

I can give you the exact same argument that SXGA+ is better than UXGA for your "UXGA is better than QXGA".

I still have good eyes, tyvm and QXGA is perfect for daily use.

Dear g,
You seem to be such a nice person. Thanks for your advice.

I have the Uxga panels-uxga panels are actually brighter.

But I would still love to have a QXGA panel.

Please let me know if someone is selling new QXGA panels.

I checked the forum as per Johan's advice.

All the places mentioned in the forum have practically run out of these panels.

So do let me know if someone is selling new QXGA panels.
