Can someone please confirm that my warranty replacement mainboard FRU # 43Y9047 (Part # 43Y9067) just installed on my T61 15.4" T7500 w/Nvidia NVS 140M graphics is now also compatible with the Penryn processors like a T9300?

It's old board (FRU # 42W7652) was not ...... thanks :thumbs-UP:

Looks like in 2008 this was an issue, the FRU boards were of the 42YXXXX, at the time, newer replacement boards were compatible with both, I can't imagine a 2011 replacement board not being compatible if those were back then, but your 43YXXXX board has no info to be found anywhere...

I'm sure you seen this thread when searching:

http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.ph ... 15&start=0

Apparently if your willing to take a risk, a BIOS mod to avoid the error is available, the bigger question is 300MHz and 2MB more cache worth the extra $130+ ... OTOH, if you already have one laying around, pop it in and see, either it will work, power off, or give an error :P

Thanks ozzymud .... I did see that thread earlier.

Since I have a pair of T61p units with T9300 800 Bus Penryn CPUs, I'll try one out on the T61 once the warranties are up .... good idea .... thanks.

BTW, on a separate note, the later Penryns like the T9600/T9800 and all the P-Series use a 1066 bus vs 800 ..... Does one also have to change out the memory modules for the 1066 units when moving from an 800 Bus to a 1066 Bus CPU on a ThinkPad Penryn compatible mainboard?

43Y9067 is not penryn compatible. Many/most warranty replacement boards are "servicable used parts", which means repaired. when translated into English. Most repaired nvidia boards had their GPU assemblies replaced due to the original nvidia problem. You most likely got a repaired 42W7652, which has only analog temperature sensors. The good news is that you probably got the later version of the nvidia chip

Really? ..... So is the white box mainboard the Onsite service tech brought over that has FRU 43Y9047 and Part No. 43Y9067 definately just a re-numbered older 42X6844 board with an Nvidia chip dated from the 30th week in 2010 (even though it's CPU socket is white as compared to the black CPU socket on my old merom mainboard)?

Maybe anyone know how is with this: 43Y9044. It's Penryn compatibile? I want to buy T9300 or T9500. I can't find anything about this MB. Lenovo service replaced it year ago, gpu fail.

Thanks for any help!

I checked the boards I have around here and the CPU socket color has nothing to do with being penryn-compatible. I have both black and white that can take penryn, and I have black and white that cannot. I cannot say for sure that your board won't take a penryn. I always try a CPU to be sure, but my notes say that 43Y9047 cannot.

I also believe that 43Y9044 is not.

Okay thanks ..... Can I cause any damage if I do eventually try one of my two Penryn T9300 CPUs off my T61p units (as a test)?

Certainly a test won't hurt. Some people ignore the error. (Hit ESC at first sign of fan error message) My guess is that the board will not correctly recognize an overheat condition

Some also use a patched BIOS to eleminate the error, quite a few have been doing that for some time with no complaints.

I mean as long as you monitor temps/fans like with a tray app, and you do maintence on your machine (keeping dust cleared), about the only overheat issue you would have is if the fan dies or something is horribly wrong anyways :P

Thanks for the help ..... BTW, on the rare chance the T9300-800 Bus Penryn works without error on my T61, and I decide to leave it in the T61, would I need to purchase 1066 bus speed memory modules if I put a P-series or late-build 1066 bus T-series replacement Penryn (T9800 or T9900) in the T61p, which used to have the T9300-800, and presently only has PC-5300 800 bus modules?

The 965 chipset used in the T61 does not support the 1066Mhz bus processors does it?

T9800 or T9900 won't work. (T9500 will)

Is that because of the 800 vs 1066 bus thing?

I thought I remembered being able to order new a T61p with a P-series 1066 bus CPU back in late-2008 .... would those units have a different mainboard than a T9300 or T9500 800 bus T61p?

The board won't, but IIRC stuff like coretemp will still work, since that uses on-die sensors. AFAIK they'll still trigger MCE's if the actual CPU temp gets too high, so you shouldn't have to worry about roasting the chip.
