Hello Thinkpad forum,

After a week of using my new Lenovo T60 (which I bought from someone else/no warranty) I suddenly get this error message after I made some hdd and bios password chances:

Initializing Intel(R) Boot Agent GE v1.3.24

PXE-E05: The LAN adapter's configuation is corrupted or has not been initialized. The Boot Agent cannot continue.

Two bleeps and then this message pops up:

ERROR Expansion ROM initialized - PCI on Motherboard
BUS: 00, Device:00, Function: 00

Press <ESC> to continue

I am not able to boot Windows xp professional. Although if the 'Internal Network Option Rom' is disabled the 2 messages disapear and the Windows xp logo/loading screen makes its entrance. However, the loadbar hangs after just 2 seconds and Bluescreen comes up on screen with the following error:

Check for viruses on your computer. Remove any newly installed
hard drives or hard drive controllers. Check your hard drive
to make sure it is properly configured and terminated.
Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption and then
restart your computer.

Technical information:

*** STOP: 0x0000007B (0xBA4D3524, 0xC0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)

I took my Hard disk out and placed it back in. Same results. I did the bios hard disk test which resulted in an error after scanning 50% of it.

I stumbled across other threads regarding this problem. But as I see it could be a hard disk problem instead of something else. Although I'm absolutely not sure about that either.

Could someone help me out please?

Welcome to the forum!

The first error you mention is usually when the hard drive is not detected or not working.

Check in the BIOS under SATA and change the setting from AHCI to COMPATIBILITY or visa versa.

If that does not help I would go back into the BIOS and load the setting defaults from the main BIOS screen and then try to boot again.

If still no success I would try another hard drive.

I formatted a bootable floppy as stated and the IBAUTIL was created on disc.

once you get through the floppy boot and the program creates your R: drive for the cdrom (drive letter may be different in some cases), switch to R and run the following command:

IBAUTIL -DEFCFG

(or IBAUTIL.EXE -DEFCFG)

I tried. The error messages are gone. Unfortunately Windows still gives me the bluescreen.

Did you change the SATA mode in BIOS to compatibility or AHCI by mistake? Try one or the other settings.

^ Ok I did. The xp loadscreen gives me a new bluescreen: UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME. Both start windows normally and safe mode.

Yeah it is. Hitachi HTS722012K9SA00 (120 GB). I did not drop the t60, neither did I something stupid in Windows itself. I did however made a hard disk password + accidently pulled out the simcard flop at the back. Nothing seems wrong about though.

Well, in BIOS, security, password, disable Hard Disk1 Password.

This is what I see.. Hard Disk1 Password: [User+Master], when I select that I get: [User HDP] [Master HDP] when one of those are selected > Enter Current Pass, Enter New, Confirm Password. I have no clue how to disable this. Settings such as Power-On Pass, Require Pass after hibernate etc. are disabled.

Select enter current password and then it should allow you to disable it . (Note, this is a guess. I don't use hardware passwords. The reason I don't use them is to avoid the exact fun you are having today .)

Well it does not gives you the option to disable it. Entering in the current password and leaving 'Enter new Pass' + 'Confirm New Pass' empty gives me the message: Master HDP is required to disable hard disk password. Re-enter password. Master HDP is screwed up because it accepted an empty field when I first made that password. Now it doesn't accept a blank field anylonger.

It's time for a new drive. There is no way to fix or recover a drive with a messed up Hard drive password. It's a hockey puck now.

A new hard disk? After the new hard disk is placed and Windows xp pro is installed again it should be all good?

Yes

Problem has been fixed! chkdsk /r command did the trick.

Both user and master pass are active it says. User hdp (which I still remember) is the only thing it asks for when opening bios. Starting up windows is not a problem. Password wasn't the problem.. Thanks anyway

IF YOU KNOW the HDD PWs and want to clear them, you do the following in the BIOS

If you have both user and master set:
Select HDD1 or HDD2 (the one you want to clear)
Select change master password
Type in the current password
Press enter twice on the new and confirm new pw.

That will clear BOTH passwords

If you only have user OR master pw set:
Sselect the HDD #
Select to change the password that you want to clear
Enter the current password
Then two blanks (enter key) to clear.

Basically you change it to "blank", but you have to change the master first if that's set.
