Please connect the fingerprint reader

When logging onto Windows XP on one of my T60s I'm prompted to swipe my finger. When I do so it says for about one second Please connect the fingerprint reader. Then it prompts me to swipe my finger again. Therefore it knows I'm swiping my finger but it's not satisfied that the reader is properly connected, evidently. Does anyone know what this might mean and what I can do to fix it? When I looked to see if the fingerprint reader was connected some months ago it appeared to be connected. At that time I didn't realize that it worked at all, but now I see the admonition to connect the reader, so figure it's partly functional, sort of...

Has the FPR been activated in BIOS and is the security software installed?
Personally, I wouldn't bother with FPR, it's quite often flaky, and if something goes amiss, you're up the proverbial creek without a paddle!

I'll check the BIOS, but it used to work fine on this machine. Here's the situation:
This is my first T60, bought Nov. 2006, and it included the FPR, which I used successfully. I bought another T60 used less than a year ago and it's FPR wasn't working somehow. I swapped the palmrest with this T60, and now this one's FPR doesn't work, the other's does. I think I'll just swap them again because this is the one I'm using the most.
On those occasions when the FPR doesn't seem to work I just press C-A-D and enter my Windows pass word. I find that a bit of moisture on my finger makes the FPR work better, just a 1/2 drop (the tongue and then shirt come in handy!).
