Blank hard drive in T60?

#1 Post by ozyack » Thu Jul 14, 2011 8:55 am

Hi there everyone,
The hard drive of my T60 has broken due to impact, now I need to get a new one. Please help me with the followings?

1-) Up to how many gigs will myT60 support (eg 500 gb ?)
2-) Apart from getting a 2.5" SATA hard drive, is there anything else I should be careful with the hard drive (eg. brand, any other specs)?
3-) I have no recovery cd. Only got Windows XP. How will I install all the drivers and lenovo software?

Any help will be appreciated a lot!

Many thanks!

G'day and welcome to the Forum.
Any 2.5" SATA HD that is 9.5mm thick will work. There's no size-limit.
To get all the Lenovo drivers, install MS DotNetFramework, then Lenovo's SystemUpdate 3.14.
That will get you the required stuff.
Alternatively, get a set of IBM/Lenovo Recovery CDs for XP-Pro in e.g. our Market Forum or directly from Lenovo.

Thanks a lot for your reply! The thing is, how will I install these to my computer? Will my USB ports be recognized after I install windows XP?

You install everything using the CD/DVD drive.
If you don't have one, you can also use an external USB CD/DVD drive.
If activated in the BIOS, USB ports should be recognized at any time, regardless of an OS being installed or not.

Thanks :).

I'm just in process of buying a hard-drive, will update the topic once I'm finished with all the work :).

Hi there.
I got myself a WD 500 gig, working well :)
But I am having trouble with installing Lenovo System Update after I installed Framework.
It says, ThinkVantage System Update could not find a supported .NET Framework, and then System Update setup fails.
I tried both Framework 1.0 and 4.0.
No difference. Now what?

ps: if it helps I got T60 2007 EQ7, windows XP SP3.

dotnetfx 1.0 is too old and 4.0 is buggy. 3.5 has always worked well for me.
Collection = T500 - R400 - X300 - X200 - T61 (14" WXGA+) - T61 (14.1" SXGA+) - T60 (15" SXGA+) - X40 - T43p - T43 - T42p - A30P - 600E

From the (Lenovo) horse's mouth:
Microsoft .NET Framework version 1.1 with Service pack 1 or Microsoft .NET Framework version 2.0 is required for System Update to work Correctly. Use Microsoft Windows Update to ensure that Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 or 2.0 is installed on your system.

I had XP SP3 and Windows update installed Framework 2.0 SP2, 3.0 SP2 and 3.5 SP1.

And it worked! System Update 3.14 installed succesfully!

But...

I thought this would give me the drivers but no.. I still don't have them. Took me 1 hour to only find the network drivers correctly lol..

How will I install all the drivers automatically? And Lenovo Software too...

Installing SystemUpdate is half the battle won already.
Did it occur to you to also RUN it? That should get you the missing drivers.
It won't get you IBM/Lenovo stuff like CD-writing or DVD-playing software, that is only available using the Recovery CDs.

After the setup it just disappeared so I thought it was working like a driver does, lol

All good now, running it so far so good!

Thanks a lot, RealBlackStuff!!

Oh also, is there a way to create a bootable cd out of this for my next format?

Not really, unless with an awful lot of effort.
Much easier to get e.g. Acronis TrueImage and take an image that you can then (re)load on the same or other T6x machine.

Imaging these machines definitely saves time in case of future problems. I use bart pe with ghost32.exe very nice combo and fairly easy to build the bootable cd. If you feel like reading up on it http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/ this will allow you to access the ghost32 image builder which will be stored on a usb, where you also will put your image.
