What are the advantages and disadvantages? Do you use it? Use part of it? Disable parts of it? Uninstall it?

I have 2 T60's (Running XP Pro) and 1 T61 (running Windows Ultimate 64 bit). I was using Avira Antivir Free, but am tired of the nag screens to upgrade and am going to Microsoft Security Essentials.

I generally disable the security chip in BIOS (as well as the Fingerprint Reader if there), and always uninstall any security software.
The whole construct is just too flaky for my liking. YMMV.
If the FPR does not work and you forgot your System password, you are up the proverbial creek without a paddle.

As to AV, I recommend to change over to the free Avast. You'll need to register an email address with them, but I have yet to receive any mail from them in a few years now! :)

I do use FingerPrint reader under standard Win7 controls. I do not use Client Security Solution.

Did you uninstall the Client Security Solution?

Windows 7 has it's own mechanism for handling log on using a fingerprint reader? I could swear I had the FPR working on one of my T60s that had the CSS uninstalled, don't remember having to do anything special to do it. Maybe it was set up kind of seamlessly, I don't remember.

I installed a blank SSD hard drive in my T60 and installed vanilla Win7 on that - so there was no CSS to uninstall in that method.

Yes, Win7 introduces a common framework for biometrics. Prior to that, each vendor needed to supply their own drivers, software, etc.

Actually, I installed Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit from disc on my T61 and the FPR does work. I installed some Lenovo stuff from their site but CSS, can't be among them, I figure.

I'm going to have to look into SSDs at some point. I've always booted from HDs. The prices are coming down, I suppose. I know it isn't rocket science, but the threads/posts I've read suggest that there is still a forest of issues to navigate. My plate's pretty full right now already.
