Hey guys, got a thinkpad on ebay. Once it is in hand, I will be able to dig in and figure out what I want to upgrade. I plan on 4gbram, a wifi N capable radio, and as good a processor as I can drop in. Hopefully I can get some intel from you guys as to what might work. Intel T9xxx processor? Anyway, wish me luck.

What is the machine type/model number on that machine? If the seller didn't specify, you might have to wait until it arrives and check the sticker on it's bottom.
If it's this one in your sig? Lenovo Thinkpad T61p, Intel Core2 T7300, 2GB DDR2, nVidea FX570m, 100GB 7200, 1680x1050 matte, Win 7 Ult x64
then you should look at this thread for Penryn compatibility ....

T7800 65 nm 4MB L2 2.6 GHz 800 MHz
T7700 65 nm 4MB L2 2.4 GHz 800 MHz
T7500 65 nm 4MB L2 2.2 GHz 800 MHz

Any of the above would work. Choice depends on your wallet.

How much additional heat is generated by a T7800 compared to my `standard' 2GHz CPU? I have a T61 model 8889-26U and am considering a CPU upgrade.

I don't know if it'll work. My guess would be no. Even if it does you've got to find a way to deal with the extra heat as the X7900 is a 44w CPU and the T61 is designed to take 35w CPUs.

I saw a thread where a guy claimed to be using an x9000 in his t61p.... always take claims like that with a grain of salt tho....
-my plans are t7800/x7900, 4gb 800mhz ram, 500gb 7200rpm seagate momentus... and a t420s later on..... :-)

Yeah heat is an issue if you stray away from the Core 2 Duo 'T' series into extreme 'X' land. I am putting a T7800 in mine.

Sounds good. Anyone ever bought a used processor on ebay? What are the chances that some of them are fakes? I have heard horror stories....

I never had a problem. Just make sure it has a warranty of some sort, even if it is just non-DOA.

Got my system up and running today. Havn't had any issues with the x7900. Its fast, and hasn't been hot at all.
