T60 refurb deal?

I picked up one of these a week ago, got it for $224 (free ship), the price has bumped up a bit now + shipping (they sold out pretty fast at the 224 price point). Came with a genuine IBM dock.

Very happy with it so far, poor graphics and low end processor, but it serves my purpose very well.

The one I received was is in pristine shape, must have been in the dock its entire life, absolutely no signs of wear.

Ran CrystalDiskInfo on the hard drive and it showed 1523 days of power on time (no way to know if it is the original drive though) . Replaced the drive with a WD black series I had laying around, runs much faster now.

It has the recovery partition but no way to make recovery discs that I can find, so I imaged the hard drive.


Can this model support the newer Core 2 processors ? (not duo)

It can do the T5500, T5600, T7200, T7400 and T7600.

no, my understanding is the core 2 duo was the first generation of the the core 2, then they dropped duo name from the next generation of core 2's

I've never heard of anyone successfully upgrading a R60/T60/Z61 generation unit to anything but T5500/5600 or T7200/7400/7600...

It is New not used.

CPUs rarely fail. As long as it's got some kind of DOA warranty, I'd buy it, but that's me.

Its just not a faulty one that worries me it is mishandling of the processor from the time it is removed to the time it gets to me.

If there is enough price difference to gamble I will. I don't see it on the 5500 though.

Yeah, same here. The only problem I've ever had in nearly 20 years building / upgrading / refurbishing PCs w/r/t buying second-hand CPUs is bent pins. Only once was a pin bent so much that it broke when I tried to straighten it.

Recycle, reduce and reuse as they say. Don't be afraid of second-hand CPUs unless they're being sorted by a guy with a shovel.

What's the point in "upgrading" T2400 to a T5500? It will not be one bit faster. For the 64bit support? Even given the T60's 3GB RAM limitation?

Nothing short of a T7200 will be a worthy upgrade, IMO.

Ummm, I wouldn't crack the case to do *that* upgrade personally, not unless I needed a 64-bit CPU. Nor was I suggesting it. However it would be a little more efficient and, as we all know, efficiency can be very important to a laptop user.

Agreed. Both of my 15" T60s are running T7400s (one of which I robbed from a Sony Vaio and, running NHC to undervolt it, it's almost CULV. I wish I could feed it less than 0.950V).

My post wasn't in support of a T5500 over a T2400. It was in support of buying used CPUs and saying that I've done it hundreds of times with no problems, only once did I have an issue.

Teh intarwebs are almost unanimous in saying that a C2D is ~10% more efficient (MIPs per Watt) than the CDs.

Ah, I see. I did not pay attention to the timeline. I hope the OP has not bought the T5500 yet. The C2D is indeed about 10% more efficient or so they say. Which would be exactly enough to offset the difference in speed in favor of the T2400 (1.83 vs 1.66). So it would not run any faster by any stretch of imagination. Whether at $20 or at $50, if 64bit support is not essential, this would be 100% wasted money.

I have T7200 in my T60. I suppose it would be somewhat faster with a T7400/T7600. But I doubt it would be noticeable. If someone offered to swap my machine with an otherwise identical one, but with a faster CPU, I would take it. But even if someone gave me a T7400/T7600 for free, I doubt the CPU speed gains would be worth it for me to even bother opening it up and replacing the CPU.
