T60 Hangs... unless I remove the battery

My T60 battery, I think, is totally dead.
Now that doesn't really bother me in the slightest as it never leaves my desk... I use it purely to record music.
However, it now freezes every time I try and use it.
I have however sussed out that removing the dead battery completely fixes the issue... no more hangs.

So firstly...
The question is... is that normal??

Secondly...
My security now often rejects my password.
I log in as normal during boot up. It then loads WinXP and then asks me to log in again.
It then won't accept my password until I click cancel. It then asks me again and this time works.
I'm guessing this will be something to do with the now absent battery... but is there anything I can do about this?

Cheers.

Dead batteries can actually wreck your laptop!
It's never bad to have a working battery in the laptop.
That way, if you get a power-out, you can save your work and switch off without any data loss.
Another possibility is that your CMOS battery (small yellow battery under the keyboard) is near-dead.
Is cheap enough to replace. Any of the millions of IBM CMOS batteries (for T20/T30/T40/R50/T60 etc.) on eBay will fit.

Fair enough RE power-outs, but would having no battery all do any damage?

Having said that, I can eBay a battery and CMOS battery for 25UKP so I guess I should just do it... then I'm covered :)

No problem with no battery - just don't yank the adapter cord!

Oftentimes, a defective battery will freeze a T60/R60/T61/R61.

Is this something that would occur with no battery attached then? Or do you think it's the CMOS battery.
Having said that, it's only done this since I took the main battery out completely.
