Pre August 2008 T61p, IBM refurb

I received the T61p (6457-AK7) today from IBM. It carries a one year warranty but had a build date of June, 2008; according to best information, this pre-dates the revision of the graphic chip and conventional wisdom states that this, as originally shipped, will fail.

Any idea if IBM would have replaced the graphic chip when they took it in? They are unable to answer this question. If not, any reason to take a chance on the $340 machine or should I just ship it back?

I'd pull the CPU fan and check the version on the GPU first. Personally I would not keep an older T61P with a potential time bomb in it.

I was wary of even a simple keyboard/fan/heat sink removal, did not see any "warranty voided if removed" tape but, if it needed to go back I did not want to give IBM any excuse. I was also less than impressed with the build, the screen hinges had about an inch of play. I soldier on with my almost 6 ear old T43, tight build with the very nice 15" flexview screen(although it has been back for repair five or six times, always three day depot service, handled very well.)

In fact part of the decision to send it back was predicated on Lenovo's less than stellar owning up to the problem with the nvida chip.

As always, the advice on this list is priceless!
